Rumours about Apple [AAPL] releasing a smaller iPad have been around before. Today they have resurfaced with details indicating that a 7 inch iPad could land around Christmas time this year.
Although this is a new iPad (if it arrives), we wouldn’t label it an iPad 2 in a way that our understanding of it shows that it’s just a smaller version of the current iPad that is available right now.
The information comes from Digitimes who is correct in some cases but also not correct in other cases. However, they are reporting that a 7 inch iPad from Apple is almost ready to be assembled over in Taiwan.
The Economic Daily reports that Taiwanese companies have won a number of component contracts for the iPad 2. Chimei Innolux will supply 7-inch LCD screens, which use the same IPS (in-plane switching) technology found in the original iPad, which improves viewing angles and color on LCD screens. Touchscreen technology for the screens will come from Cando Corporation, the report says.
Of course this is just a rumour though. It might happen, but we wont know for sure until we see a leaked iPad mini, or until Steve Jobs gets on stage to announce it. It isn’t too far out of question though considering tablets are re appearing this year and selling well for Apple. We expect that they will experiment with different sizes.
