AppleInsider has reported that AirPrint in iOS 4.2 could be delayed indefinitely for those who would connect up to a printer on a Windows or Mac based device. Rather than being able to print to a shared printer as originally planned, it seems that this feature might be pulled out of iOS 4.2 and instead of using shared printers, the system might only work with wireless printers in the HP range.
Specifically, the five models mentioned are the following…
* HP Photosmart Premium Fax e-All-in-One Printer – C410
* HP Photosmart Premium e-All-in-One Printer series – C310
* HP Photosmart Plus e-All-in-One Printer series – B210
* HP ENVY 100 e-All-in-One Printer Series – D410
* HP Photosmart eStation Printer series – C510″
The technology its self was originally described a couple of months ago as so…
“AirPrint is Apple’s powerful new printing architecture that matches the simplicity of iOS—no set up, no configuration, no printer drivers and no software to download,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing, in the press release. “iPad, iPhone and iPod touch users can simply tap to print their documents or photos wirelessly to an HP ePrint printer or to a printer shared on a Mac or PC.”
iTunes 10.1 is expected today and will be followed a couple of days later with iOS 4.2. If these rumours are correct, and they have been confirmed in documentation by the way, then printing from the iPad might now require you purchase one of the above five printers.
