BBC will be rolling out iPlayer to international markets sometime next year. The announcement was made by the Chief Executive of BBC Worldwide, John Smith.
“Not only will that mean international fans of, for example, Doctor Who can get their fix legitimately, but it has the potential of opening up a new revenue stream for the entire UK production industry.”
Unlike the UK population who pay TV licensing fees each year to access the iPlayer content (and all other BBC content), the international markets will be looking at advertisements in the shows as well as investigating a subscription based model.
A specific launch date isn’t known and as of now, we only know it will be launched in 2011 sometime.
