Blu-ray discs could soon see the storage capacities increased from 25GB to 33.4GB per layer thanks to a new methods of reading and writing data.
The science behind the new capacity is quite detailed and involves something known as i-MLSE (Maximum Likelihood Sequence Estimation) that in the near future will be calculated real time allowing for the larger capacities to be read successfully.
Both Sony and Panasonic are behind this and it is expected that i-MLSE will adopted as a standard for Blu-Ray discs. As of yet, it is unknown when the technology will be widely used.
