For those of you who updated to the leaked Motorola DROID X Android 2.2 update, bad news is in store as you wont be able to install the official update when it arrives in a few weeks time.
Motorola has announced that those who manually installed the leaked ROM will be cut out from the official upgrade path. They will provide no way to update to the latest version.
This is quite a big contrast when compared to the HTC EVO 4G which HTC did it’s best to create a patch that would fix the problem of upgrading early.
WARNING: Do NOT load the leaked 2.2 upgrade that has been floating around on the Internets. There is currently no upgrade path from that load to the official 2.2 load that will be released by early September. Unless you have some plan to flash your phone back to the current official load, you could be stuck on the leaked version.
This doesn’t close all hope though as they do mention that a jump back to the official Android 2.1 release will remedy the problem. Instructions on how to do this can be found at Droid Life.
