HMV looks set to join the digital download competition by launching a new service that allows users to download MP3 files from it’s online store.
The new service will tackle the likes of Amazon and iTunes as well as others who are big players in the industry. The service is being started by 7Digital of which HMV own a 50% share in. The service when ready, will be compatible with both Mac and Windows based computers. There are no details on whether mobile devices will be able to connect just yet.
Price wise, the service will see singles selling for 40p each and albums costing £4.99. Artists will be featured weekly along side special offers on albums and music in general.
‘We are delighted to launch a world class download store that reflects both HMV’s music retailing heritage and our strategy to be a broad-based entertainment brand, said HMV’s head of online and digital Sarah Hughes.
It is expected that the service will launch soon, in the next few months, but as of yet, there is no official launch date.
