Steve Jobs mentioned in the Apple [AAPL] special event held earlier this week that the iPhone 3G iOS 4 speed problems have been fixed with iOS 4.1. The iOS 4.1 release date is next week which brings a number of fixes such as speed fixes and proximity sensor fixes to the iPhone 3G, 3GS and iPhone 4.
Although iOS 4.1 isn’t available for download just yet to the average iPhone user, it is available to developers. LifeHacker decided to run a test on an iPhone 3G running iOS 4.0 and iOS 4.1. As they only had one iPhone 3G to test with, the tests were not done side by side although the tests were practically identical in terms of what the user was doing.
Overall the speed of iOS 4.1 on the iPhone 3G was found to be better than iOS 4.0 although in most cases it was by a little or just barely. Maps was what performed best with it being streets ahead.
It might be worth holding off the iOS 4.1 update till others have tested it (if you are still on iOS 3.x). By doing this you’ll get a better feel for what the community is saying about the update.
