It was revealed this week that the iPhone 4 jailbreak uses an exploit found in the PDF code. When a web browser opens a PDF file, it allows code to be injected and executed which in turn, allows the jailbreak to happen. On the downside, the flaw in the PDF code also will allow malicious websites to link to PDF websites for other code to be injected that can actually cause harm to your iPhone 4.
Apple [AAPL], as expected, is looking in to the issue and we assume that by the time the iOS 4.1 update arrives in a few weeks time that the hole will be sealed preventing the iPhone 4 jailbreak in it’s current form from working for those who upgrade to iOS 4.1.
It is important to remember here though that Apple will also be sealing a potentially dangerous security hole by doing this.
For those who want to jailbreak all is not lost though as you have a couple of options. The first is to not upgrade beyond iOS 4.0.1. The second is to just sit and wait as Comex, the creator of jailbreakme.com, says that there are other security holes he can exploit to get the jailbreak working.
At the end of the day, it’s just another cat and mouse game that goes on and on with the hackers always being a step ahead.
On a completely separate note… the iPhone 4 unlock is now available.
