Reports today indicate that the next version of Android for smartphones will be launching in the summer of this year. The new version will be Android 2.4 and will be codenamed Ice Cream. Expect it to be officially announced in May.
Google uses the alphabet to give the devices code names which starts with the 2.x versions as Donut, Eclair, Froyo, Gingerbread and Honeycomb. Honeycomb is actually version 3.0 and departs from the 2.x numbering due to Honeycomb being for tablets only. Ice Cream which is the next smartphone version jumps back to the 2.x numbering system.
Since Eclair was launched, Google has begun to slow down the speed at which it rolls out new updates. Gingerbread launched in December while this new version follows on about 6 months later remembering that the 3.0 update is for tablets only, so doesn’t necessarily break up this sequence.
Nothing is known about the next smartphone version other than it appears it will be 2.4 with the Ice Cream name. As soon as we get more details/rumors about it, we’ll let you know.
