New patents published in the US hint that iOS devices could be getting a Thunderbolt port. One of the patents says “a connection may be provided between a portable media player and a display, a computer and a portable media player, or between other types of devices.” which has led a number of people to believe that this will include iOS devices.
To get Thunderbolt working on an iOS device it will require a redesigned connector which will fit the thinner form factor.
Remember that not all patents are actually used. We’ve seen Apple file many different patents and a lot of them never see the light of day. With Thunderbolt being adopted by Apple on various new devices it only makes sense that the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch will see it in a future generation so that transfer speeds can be made faster. We don’t know if it will make it in to the iPad 3 or the iPhone 5, but we’ll find out for sure in the next few months when the announcements are made.
