Apple iPhone 3G S Untethered Jailbreak in Progress

Earlier this year Blackra1n was released that allowed you to jailbreak your Apple iPhone 3G or 3G S. The problem with the phones running the latest boot rom was that a reboot of your phone required that you tether your iPhone to a PC or Mac and reapply the Blackra1n jailbreak. This was related to something with Apple [AAPL] using NAND flash for storing certain files.

Although a tethered jailbreak works fine in that it takes seconds to click the Blackra1n button when booting up your phone, it can be a problem if you are out and about and need to boot your device for some reason.

After a few months of waiting, George Hotz has managed to do it again by creating an untethered jailbreak for the Apple iPhone 3G and 3G S as well as it “probably” working on the iPad too.

I assume with it working on the iPad that it means the jailbreak is also compatible with iPhone OS 3.1.3 which previously the jailbreak would not work on.

The jailbreak took 2.5 days to complete from start to finish which is quite impressive considering most of these guys work in teams and yet, George appears to do it alone.

The update is not ready for release yet though and perhaps he is waiting a few weeks for the iPad to launch, or maybe even waiting for an iPhone OS update in a few months. Either way he asks you don’t ask him for it as it wont arrive any quicker.

It’s certainly a good achievement. Details can be found here.

  1. I can’t wait for the “clean” jailbreak, so you think it is going to take several weeks for it to be out ?

    • Yaski, I’ve not had any confirmation of that, but some are expecting iPhone OS 3.2 and iPhone OS 4.0, so he “might” be waiting for that. Or, he might just release it any day now and re hack if necessary at a later date. No idea to be honest.
