The Sony Ericsson X8 came with just Android 1.6 installed. Sony Ericsson has now announced that Android 2.1 is beginning to roll out to the smartphone although it is going out in various stages rather than all at the same time.
The roll-out is based on serial numbers. Rather than list all the SI numbers, you can visit the Sony Ericsson product blog to get a list of those numbers that are already getting the update. If your phone isn’t listed then you’ll need to wait a little longer. [Read more…]

Samsung is starting up a new production line for creating displays in May 2011. This new production line will see the production of Super AMOLED displays vastly increase.
From what we are hearing today, Samsung has been getting the highest profit margins of any of the display manufacturers worldwide. The company is reporting $900m in sales with a 10.5% operating margin. A lot of this is expected to be generated by the Super AMOLED screens that were added to the Galaxy S Class of smartphones. We recently heard about the Angry Birds Christmas Edition launching in the next week or so. A number of people guessed that it would have the usual price tag of 99 cents to buy it. We now hear, from Rovio, that the Christmas Edition will actually be a free upgrade for those who have already purchased the Halloween edition of the game.
As well as the game being made for iOS based devices, a Christmas Edition for compatible Android devices is also being made available. [Read more…]
Yesterday saw the launch of the new PwnageTool 4.1.3 Unlock Edition. This particular tool is now used to start the unlock process on your old baseband iPhone 4 (01.59.00), iPhone 3G and 3GS on various basebands. Make sure you read the instructions before running to grab Ultrasn0w as the new Ultrasn0w 1.2 version doesn’t work out of the box for those on the 05.14 or 05.15 basebands.
Today, we now see the launch of the Redsn0w tool and it is now available for download. It works in a similar way to the PwnageTool whereby you need to create a custom firmware build with the iPad 3.2.2 baseband mixed in to unlock the iPhone. For those that need or prefer the Redsn0w tool, you can grab all the instructions on how to run and unlock your iPhone from here. [Read more…]
The iPhone Dev-Team has just announced in a blog post that Ultrasn0w is about to be updated to Ultrasn0w 1.2 (any moment now). The new 1.2 version is capable of unlocking an iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS on (as well as older baseband iPhone 4) running the following basebands…
iPhone 4 baseband 01.59.00 and iPhone 3G/3GS basebands 04.26.08, 05.11.07, 05.12.01, 05.13.04 and now 06.15.00
One thing you might note here is that 05.14 and 05.15 is missing from the list. Luckily there is a way around this where you download the iPad iOS 3.2.2 firmware and use the PwnageTool 4.1.3 Unlock Edition to update the baseband to 06.15.00. This baseband is unlockable by the Ultrasn0w 1.2 tool. [Read more…]
Yesterday, a new tool was launched that allows you to unlock a feature on Windows Phone 7 smartphones. Once unlocked, you gain the ability to sideload apps as though you were a developer.
Microsoft [MSFT] has now officially responded. In simple form, they advice against doing it.
“We anticipated that people would attempt to unlock the phones and explore the underlying operating system. We encourage people to use their Windows Phone as supplied by the manufacturer to ensure the best possible user experience. Attempting to unlock a device could void the warranty, disable phone functionality, interrupt access to Windows Phone 7 services or render the phone permanently unusable.”
More details about the Playstation Phone from Sony Ericsson have leaked. The details were leaked to Mobile Crunch who heard that the Playstation Phone was very real.
A few other details mentioned about the device include the screen being on par with the iPhone 4 retina display perhaps with some BRAVIA technology being pushed in there by Sony. We also hear that the device is nowhere near ready and that it might be ready for February to be launched at Mobile World Congress. [Read more…]
Apple launched iOS 4.2.1 at the beginning of this week. Some people running it on an iPhone 3G are reporting issues when the iPhone has been unlocked to use on another network. When doing that, the Internet Tethering option in some cases is removed.
This, of course, is for those running an iPhone 3G that has been officially unlocked as there is no unofficial unlock available just yet for those running iOS 4.2.1. [Read more…]
