Google Chrome Web Store Almost Ready

The Google Chrome Web Store looks like its preparing to go live shortly. The reason for thinking this is that Google [GOOG] has started to ask US developers to start linking their apps up to Google Checkout merchant accounts so that they can preview what the app will look like when it goes live in the store.

Guidelines have also been released by Google to explain the process of uploading to the web store along with details on backgrounds, screenshots as well as icons and promotional images. [Read more…]

Nokia to Use Windows Phone 7 – Rumour

You need to have a pinch of salt type mind set when you read this rumour. We hear today that Nokia is looking in to using Windows Phone 7 on some of its smartphones in the near future. The information supposedly comes from Stephen Elop, the new CEO of Nokia, who wants the company to investigate alternative operating systems to use on handsets.

A while back, a similar rumour spread about the possibility of Nokia using Google Android. This was denied and hasn’t happened yet. We are inclined to think that this rumour is just the same and that Nokia will continue to work the same way as they have been for a long time. [Read more…]

Verizon to Introduce Tiered Data Plans

Verizon CEO Ivan Seidenberg has commented that the company plan to get rid of unlimited data plans with in the next four to six months.

Replacing the plans will be tiered data plans based on consumption of the user. As for pricing, it is unknown if Verizon [VZ] will go higher or lower than the likes of AT&T [T] who also recently got rid of unlimited data plans.

The CEO noted that Verizon values data differently to its competition. This doesn’t really make it clear if Verizon will become more expensive or cheaper than AT&T on a per MB calculation. [Read more…]

Facebook Down for 2.5 Hours Last Night – Details Explained

Yesterday, Facebook went down for 2.5 hours. Normally this kind of news wouldn’t be covered here as it’s not that interesting. However, as it’s Facebook that has a good number of servers and infrastructure handling the millions/billions of requests per day we thought we’d mention what actually happened.

When a website goes down, like gadgetvenue for example, you just restart a service, quickly find out what happened, fix a script and off it goes again.

When Facebook went down, it was because of a problem with a script. Basically the problem was described as “an unfortunate handling of an error condition. An automated system for verifying configuration values ended up causing much more damage than it fixed.” [Read more…]

Adobe Plenoptic Lens Keeps Photos Always in Focus

Adobe has created a new system for computational photography that uses a plenoptic lens to capture subjects. What makes this particular set up different is that it can capture a subject and then process the photograph afterwords to get the correct part of the picture in focus.

The image that is captured uses a bunch of tiny lenses to capture the image each focusing in a different part of the scene. The example in the image above shows a girl in front of some trees. The image can be processed to show either the girl in focus or the trees in focus or even anything else seen in the picture in focus.

The plenoptic lens sits in front of the sensor and is a collection of lenses. When light passes through it, the sensor picks up a bunch different perspectives of an image of which each are captured by the sensor in a single sweep. These fragments of the scene can then be put together through rendering to produce an image focused as you want it. [Read more…]

Official Galaxy Tab Hands-On by Samsung

We have seen the Samsung Galaxy Tab in other videos. In the past, the videos have just demonstrated the tablet hardware its self and not so much the software that runs on the Tab other than a few glimpses of a few apps.

An official video uploaded by Samsung yesterday now shows a good look in to how the software works and what apps are provided with the Galaxy Tab. The demo starts off showing the device powered on, unlocked and then a quick run through the scrolling menus. It looks quite smooth and the larger screen seems to work well with the tablet, better than I thought. [Read more…]

Looking at the competition, it appears that Barnes & Noble is still ahead with a claim of 1 million titles that can be downloaded electronically. Either way, both sets of numbers are impressive. [Read more…]
