iOS Version Code-Names Detailed

When Apple [AAPL] releases a new version of the iOS operating system the only names that we get are iOS 5.X for example. Developers see a little more which includes the build number which currently is 9B5117b for the latest beta.

What we see today though is that Apple actually use code-names just like Google does with Android versions. Google also uses a numbering system but is also open with code-names like Gingerbread and Ice Cream Sandwich.

Siri Used to Control an Entire Room

A new plugin has been created that can allow Siri to control various items in a home. The plugin doesn’t have a name at the moment which means we’ll just have to call it the Room Controller plugin.

Since the Siri protocol was captured and figured out a few programs have been able to make use of the data and capture it on its way to Apple and then pass the needed information back to the phone with a result. We’ve seen this before thanks to plamoni who created some proxy software that could step in-between the iPhone 4S and Apple to capture commands.

iOS 5.1 Beta Breaks Home Screen Shortcuts

A handy trick was found a few weeks ago which let users create shortcuts in iOS to various settings without the need to jailbreak the iPhone. These shortcuts could be used to switch WiFi on and off which then prevented the need to go home, click settings, click wireless and toggle it off. It appears that the latest 5.1 update has now broken this feature.

iTether iPhone App Gets Removed from the App Store

Just a couple of days ago a new app was approved by Apple for launch. The new app called iTether, allowed PC and Mac users to connect up to the internet and share the connection from the iPhone. Although Tether were open and honest about the app and even provided a video demonstration at the request of Apple, Apple has now removed the app from the store.

Amazon Kindle Fire Update Download Now Available

Amazon has begun pushing out an update for the new Amazon Kindle Fire. The new update brings the software up to version 6.2. On the downside, Amazon pushes the update out automatically and installs automatically when connected to a WiFi connection. This means that all rooted devices are made un-rooted although you can easily root again if needed.

iFixit managed to get hold of a Galaxy Nexus early thanks to someone in the UK. In the US the new smartphone hasn’t even launched yet.

As always, iFixit has taken the device apart to see what it looks like inside and also to look at what chip numbers are used as well as determine how easy the new device is to repair.

Google Introduces the New Google Bar

Google is making another design tweak to many of its services. The small tweak gets rid of the black bar across the top of the page and puts it in a drop down found just below the Google logo as pictured below. The bar is now hidden and only made visible when rolling over the Google logo.
