Nokia 5700 XpressMusic
The Nokia 5700 XpressMusic phone was just announced. The 5700 is a 3G phone which has more style then your typical Nokia type phone. The keypad can be twisted to reveal dedicated music player keys. Sound is produced with a dedicated audio chip and played via built in stereo speakers and adjustable by a 5 band graphic equalizer.

The phone has a built in 2 mega pixel camera with 4x digital zoom. The screen is a 2.2 inch QVGA screen.

1Tb DVD Sized Disc – The Teradisc

A new technology is being created which could allow up to 1Tb of data to be stored on a single disc. The device is capable of recording and reading over 100 virtual layers on a single disc. When it is launched (probably 2010) they will launch with 500Gb of storage which will then soon be upped to 1Tb.

Most of you will be aware of the green and black effect that night time vision goggles have. As far as I can remember this has always been the same. A company named Tenebraex is working on a system to allow users of nightvision equipment to see in colour. The goggles will be sold for about 6000 dollars and directed more towards physicians in the army who up till now, see blood the same colour as water.

Here is what the company says about this device. [It] “uses one standard, green image intensifier tube to create a true, full-color image for the user. The system is also mechanical and filter based”not computer in the loop. This means that compared to other color systems, it is real time, unaffected by temperature, light weight, power frugal and low cost. The CCNVD can generate a color image down to quarter-moon light levels, At lower light levels, with the Model OP, a simple twist of a knob moves the ColorPath technology from the optical path, leaving the user with a standard, monochromatic green night vision device with all the overcast moonless night performance that he had before.

Doh – I pulled the wrong plug

Sony Notebook Headsets

Sony has announced the launch of two new headsets designed for comfort and mobility. The first version is the DR-EX230DP which is an in the ear type headset with an inline Mic for talking online. It has three sizes of ear piece to help with comfort. The other model is the DR-G250DP which is a neckband headset. This second headset has a microphone built in which is retractable.

On the technical side, the DR-EX230DP has a 9mm driver unit, 1.2M cable and is supplied with a travel case. It is ideal for the traveller who also wants to listen to music on the move.

The DR-G250DP microphone is noise cancelling making it ideal for speech recognition, and better signal clarity. The device is foldable and has a 3M cable lenght.

Both headphones will be made available by the end of March.

Sony High Capacity Storage Tape

Sony is releasing a new high capacity backup storage tape. It is named the LTO Ultrium 4 and can store 800Gb to 1.6Tb compressed with transfer rates up to 240Mbps. For those who regularly use tape backup solutions, you may be familier with LTO Ultrium 3 and 2. The main difference is that the transfer on the V3 of these tapes was 160Mbps (compressed) which has now risen. Also storage used to be 800Gb compressed and is now 1.6Gb compressed. Thats a lot of data!

As well as being a backup solution, the tape also features hardware encryption capabilities for securing data when needed. Backwards compatibility does work on version 3 but it can only read on your LTO Ultrium 2 cartridges and not write.

Solar Powered USB Flash Drive

Shenzhen Truth Digital Technology, or TRUS has created a USB flash drive with LCD display. The display appears to be used for showing storage space available, although having a file browser could happen too. We doubt the latter part though. The device also sports a solar panel which we guess is to keep the screen powered.

The device doesnt look too exciting to be honest although showing used space could be ok if you have a number of flash drives to choose from.

The Trifecta Flash Card from OCZ technologies is a unique 3 way compatible storage device. It works as a MicroSD, SD and USB key in one which allows easy transfering of files between several devices such as a laptop with USB and a phone with microSD. As transfering files is becoming more needed these days, it seems a logical step to include as many formats in 1 card so that no cables need to be carried around. Overall, I think this is an impressive device.

Two memory capacities are available allowing 1Gb or 2Gb of data to be stored wuth a read rate of 66X. The card comes standard with a 5 year warranty.

Amtek T200 iTablet

The Amtek T200 is a tablet device with 1 problem in that it cannot run Windows Vista. Just recently a BIOS update was released which now allows the tablet to be updated to Windows Vista. The video below shows the device and some of what it is capable of. It also shows you the Vista install from start to finish (high speed) and at the end you will see the device running Windows Vista.

As can be seen in the video, the size of the device is great. It has a 12.1 inch display and is 0.94 inches thick. It weighs less then 3.3lbs. The resolution is 1024 x 768 on an XGA screen.

The Helio Ocean is set to be a great mobile device. It has a dual slide keyboard offering full QWERTY and a number pad. The connectivity is provided through 3G networks which allows for streaming content. The camera is a 2 megapixel camera with a built in flash. As well as the standard features expected, this phone has GPS, full HTML browser, a large 2.4 inch screen, stereo speakers and 200Mb of internal memory. Extra memory can be added through a microSD slot up to 2Gb on the current firmware.

The Helio Ocean will be released in the Spring in the US. More details will follow as they arrive about this great looking phone.

The CIngular 8525 is a Windows Mobile 5.0 smartphone device with a 400MHz processor, 2.8 inch screen, a full QWERTY keyboard as well as plenty of connectivity through 3G and wifi.

4Wrestling has managed to get the device running Slingbox (video below). It was connected over Cingulars wireless 3G network and quality looks great

The Elsa Telebit TV Tuner SD card weighs just 5g and is capable of receiving broadcasts in 1Seg format. An ariel is included for bad signal areas which extends the range of the device. This is a cool device for those with compatible devices, but unfortunatly it wont be leaving Japan just yet.

The Telebit will cost 12800 Yen when it is launched next month.
