pRSSReader – Windows Mobile RSS Reader

pRSSReader
RSS has become an efficient way of reading information from many sources on the internet but by keeping them all in the same place. pRSSReader is a great peice of software written for Windows Mobile which allows you to download your latest feeds to your Pocket PC. An extra bonus feature about this software is that it is free at the moment. It is compatible with Pocket PC 2002 up to Windows Mobile 5 but unfortunatly now with Smartphone Edition. No doubt an update will happen soon to sort this as it would make sense to have the smartphone edition connect via GSM to get the RSS feeds.

Features built in allow you to manage your reads, cache images with in feeds for reading on the road, prozy support, summaries and more. For full details, follow the link below.

GooPs – Track yourself on Google Earth

Google GPS
Since the launch of Google Earth, we have been able to see satellite images of the earth, quite often in high detail and zoom in and out of a 3D environment. A few years back this would have cost a lot of money to have access to something like this. Mixing Google Earth with a GPS receiver, laptop and some free software you can get a very powerful in car/portable mapping system in seriously cool detail. The software you can use is called GooPs which allows you to interface the GPS device with Google Earth. Once connected and paired via Bluetooth you can fire up Google Earth and track where you visit. Another excellent feature is the caching feature of Google Earth which allows you to put it up to 2Gb. You can then zoom in to the city or place you want to visit and then use the cache to have access to the software while on the road.

The tracking software can be colour coded to show speed increases and other things. Overall it’s a very nice and very affordable solution.

Shutdown Day – 24 March 2007

Shutdown Day
Are you ready for shutdown day yet? Will you be switching off your computer on March 24 2007 for a full 24 hours? Shutdownday.org is attempting to see what would happen in the world if everybody switched off their computer for a whole day. Could you survive with out a computer for the day? I probably could especially with it being a Saturday. However, if they were to run this mid week then there is no chance 🙂 For full details on this day visit the site linked above and let us know if you will be shutting down for the day.

Columino Speakers Float on Air

Columino
If you want something different in your home for your high-tec audio system then check out these floating speakers. Ok, maybe David Blaine was the designer as they actually do not float, but a small rod behind the speakers holds the top side in the air and it gives the appearance of floating.

The speakers work by firing the noise in to the circular base which then distributes the sound outwards. They only deliver 1.7 watts though. It makes you wonder if all this fancy kit actually produces decent sound or only wants to look good. At $200 you would certainly hope so. I still wouldnt mind testing these out from Audio-Technica though as they do look cool.

Sony PSP V2

Sony PSP
The Sony PSP was launched over 2 years ago and rumours are now circulating that a redesign could be due. The PS1 and PS2 have both been through dramatic redesigns slicing all the excess off the larger versions and making them a whole lot smaller. I do not think there is too much more that could be cut down on the Sony PSP as it boasts a seriously nice sized screen which would be a shame to make smaller, however, it could be made a tad thinner. I am sure the design team at Sony will do something good with the PSP. Some PSP users are requesting a second analogue stick.

Features I would like to see in the new version is a thinner form, same sized screen, memory based rather then UMB based, dual analog controllers, analogue buttons like the PS2 and PS3 control pad and maybe a rumble option 🙂 Of course features such as wifi should stay, with the possibility of Bluetooth and GPS. We can dream though, although it’s all technically feasable with the advancements in technology.

SanDisk 2.5 Inch SSD

SanDisk SSD
Solid State Drives are a good way forwards for a number of reasons. First off is their durability and personally I would rather drop one of these then a harddisk any day. No moving parts make them tougher to the surrounding environment. As well as being stronger, the power usage is about half of what a harddrive uses. SanDisk have launched a 2.5 inch SSD which runs at just 0.9W when active and lower when not. This is a bonus for laptop users who are on the road regularly as ever bit of power saving keeps the battery running longer.

Speed wise, the SanDisk 2.5 inch SSD runs at a near 70mbps sustained which is quick and so quick in fact, that it can boot Windows Vista Enterprise version in around 30 seconds.

The SanDisk is capable of holding 32Gb of storage which is not bad at all. The drive is not available yet to consumbers, but is available to distributers for around $350.

Super Paper Mario

Super Paper Mario
Mario for years has been one of Nintendo’s greatest titles. The latest Wii version which is to be named Super Paper Mario combines the use of traditional 2D graphics with a very interesting 3D twist. You have to see the video below to get the full effect of what I mean. I personally enjoy the 2D type games more then 3D because of their ease in playing them. Adding the 3rd perspective in to this game doesnt actually take away that much from the 2D game.

If you are a die hard StarTrek fan then read on. Even if you are not then feel free to read on too. If you have a spare 500000 pounds available then you can own a fully kitted out StarTrek appartment in the UK. This StarTrek house is kitted out just like Voyager and features a transporter room which you can safely say it doesnt actually work. This house took around 150k to get it to this condition.

ViewSonic PJ258D – Projector and iPod Dock

ViewSonic PJ258D
ViewSonic are known for creating some excellent displays in the computer market. The quality and design is top notch. ViewSonic have now launched an iPod dock which when I first heard about I was suprised. However, this is no ordinary iPod dock as it is actually an LCD projector. The ViewSonic PJ258D costs $999 and is a powerfull device rated at 2000 ANSI lumens. This portable projector is not aimed at the business user, but more at those who want to watch movies on the go or at home.

The iPod dock allows you to connect your iPod directly to the projector and play movies from your iPod allowing for an ultimate portable system. The screen size limit is only restricted to the size of the wall in your home and Laptopmag tested the projector fully finding that at 10 feet away you could get an 88 inch display on your wall. If you have a 20ft living room then the screen is more then 8ft high. Of course if you want to start going for that larger size of display on the wall then lighting does become an issue, so this is best when it’s night, or with the curtains shut.
