XWpen – By Microsoft
A few years back, researchers at Microsoft created the XWPen. The XWpen was an interesting device which had a built in handwriting recording circuit which could fit in the space that and ink cartridge would take. The circuit has a tilt sensor which tracks movement of the pen. By transmitting this information to a computer near by it can then put what you write or scribble down on to the screen. It uses an RS232 port on the PC to track this via a radio transmitter at 1200 baud rate.

GyroTablet
The GyroTablet was a project by Microsoft which was never released. It uses accelerometers and gyroscopes to track it’s own movements and the software can represent these movements on the screen. Coupled together with Encarta Earth in the demonstration below you can see some great results. The project was made in 2002 with the idea of creating a richer interaction experience. Not only was this researched for Tablet PCs, it was also researched for use in Pocket PCs. By using this technology in a pocket PC you are able to interact with images on screen by tilting the device as though you were holding the object in your hand. Video after the jump.

The Sony Skateboard Patent
Sony has recently filed for a patent for something out of their normal scope. The Sony Skateboard Patent has been spotted and it looks like a similar concept to the segway – just without the handles. As you can see from the picture above it looks like a cross between a surfboard, skateboard and hoverboard with gigantic wheels attached. The skateboard works by you moving the centre of gravity to move in the direction you want to go. For those people who have not quite got the balance to surf or skate, this design allows for 2, 3 or 4 wheels so you can choose how daring you want to be.
We do not know if this idea will be hitting our shops any time soon, but what we have learnt with Sony is to watch this space.

Piggy Bank – Bank of Life
Piggy banks come in all shapes and sizes and 99% probably do not fall in to the catagory of being a pig. The bank of life follows along this vein but is cool none the less. This piggy bank has an LCD screen which houses a guy who lives in a house. When money is put in to the bank of life the guys house is upgraded. However, on the flip side we see that when money is taken out then the guy unfortunatly has no savings and ends up sleeping in a shoe box. This is a great idea for children learning to save, or me at almost 30 years of age who still does not save.
The bank of life is available in Japan for around 40 dollars.
