Sony Ericsson Xperia X8 to Cost Less Than $300 Unlocked

Back in June this year, Sony Ericsson announced the Xperia X8. After a few months of waiting we finally are seeing some more details about it. Engadget also managed to get a hands-on with the smartphone to see what it’s all about.

First impressions reveal that the X8 is a little chunky, rather than slim. It has a 3 inch screen, a 600MHz CPU and a 3.2 megapixel camera.

The downside of the X8 is that it also runs Android 1.6 along with a very deep custom skin. An update to Android 2.1 is expected in the 4th quarter of this year although there was no mention of Android 2.2 or perhaps 3.0 which most people will be looking out for at that time. [Read more…]

RIM Working on BlackBerry External Antenna – Rumour

RIM (Research in Motion) could be working on an external antenna design according to details found by BBLeaks.

One of BBLeaks sources sent in a picture showing a BlackBerry Pearl 9100 with an external antenna and also indicated that a lot of these devices with external antennas could be found at RIM’s headquarters in Canada.

The iPhone 4 launched back in June this year and also had an external antenna design that had a number of issues reported by the media and users of the phone. It isn’t clear why RIM would go down this path other than perhaps trying to get a more stable version of what Apple [AAPL] came up with. [Read more…]

iOS 4.0.2 Jailbreak Will Not Happen

The iPhone Dev Team has mentioned that iOS 4.0.2 and iOS 3.2.2 will not get a jailbreak.

The reasons are not due to them being stuck and not knowing what to do. Instead, they are waiting for a major release to be launched such as iOS 4.1 for the iPhone so that more iPhone users can take advantage of the exploit.

Now it’s a few weeks later, and Apple has closed the jailbreakme.com hole. They’re shipping devices with FW 4.0.2/3.2.2, impervious to this particular jailbreak. So now, people will begin to ask: will there be a jailbreak for devices that shipped with 4.0.2/3.2.2, out of the box?

No, there won’t be. FW 4.0.2/3.2.2 was *only* released to fix the jailbreakme hole. With FW 4.1 still in its beta stages, it makes no sense to escalate the ‘cat & mouseĀ with Apple for FW updates that only fix the jailbreak holes.

iPhone and Palm Pre Bundled in to One Device

If you can’t decide between an iPhone or a Palm Pre then perhaps this import device might be for you. According to the site that sells it, it’s a Palm Pre with QWERTY keyboard that not only has webOS running inside, it also has iOS (well, a fake iOS we should say). Looking closer at the pictures you can see it’s clearly not the real deal in terms of Apple [AAPL] software.

Other features include an iPhone home button, dual SIM card slots, 3 inch touchscreen with a 240 x 400 resolution, dual cameras, FM Radio, microSD card slot (up to 4GB), Bluetooth and WiFi. [Read more…]

Facebook on iPhone has 44 Million Users

Facebook has announced that 44 million iPhone users actively use the Facebook for iPhone app. This number came after claiming yesterday that over 100 million iOS users had installed the software. Today, a clarification came to resolve that.

“There are currently 44 million monthly active users of the Facebook for iPhone app. We recently changed the definition of mobile active users to exclude those who have only liked or commented on stream stories. Instead we are counting “active” users as people who have taken explicit actions within an application. This practice is more aligned with how we count overall active users for the site.” [Read more…]

iCam App Shows Home Owner his House Being Robbed

The iCam app for the iPhone allows users to set up webcams in their home to view them remotely.

The system can be easily configured for push notifications so that when something moves, video is captured and relayed to the iPhone.

Over in Dallas a man received a push notification that a motion sensor had been tripped. When checking out the live stream on his iPhone he could see that he was being robbed. [Read more…]

LG C900 Windows Phone 7 on AT&T [T] Gets FCC Approval

The FCC has approved the LG C900 Windows Phone 7 smartphone for use on the AT&T [T] network.

The C900 is a landscape slider phone that has WCDMA bands II and V making it compatible with the AT&T network.

If you remember back to the weekend, the LG C900 was captured showing an AT&T logo on the Windows Phone 7 home screen which indicated a new update of the OS had landed that allowed for a bit of carrier branding. [Read more…]

Samsung Galaxy S gets DivX HD Certified

Samsung has announced that the Samsung Galaxy S is now DivX Certified for HD video playback at a resolution of 720p. This makes it the worlds first Android mobile phone to reach this certification level. Previously the Samsung Wave was the first phone to get DivX HD certified making the Galaxy S the second phone.

Along with that announcement, some details of the smartphone were re-emphasized such as the 4 inch Super AMOLED display along with the 1GHz processor and powerful 3D graphics.

To enjoy DivX video on the Galaxy S, consumers can load their video libraries of both standard definition and HD 720p movies in the DivX format on the internal and external memory (expandable to 32GB) and then watch their collections anywhere they choose. In addition, the Galaxy S can connect directly to other DivX Certified devices, such as HDTVs, turning it into a powerful mobile set-top box in the living room. The Galaxy S will also support the secure playback of major Hollywood titles in the DivX format from leading studios.

HTC T8788 Windows Phone 7 Heading to AT&T

The HTC T8788 is a Windows Phone 7 smartphone that is heading to AT&T [T] in the US. We can assume that the T8788 is just a prototype name and that a better name will be unveiled before it hits the shelves (perhaps the Tytn 4 – or whatever number we are at now).

The HTC Windows Phone 7 T8788 looks to be a slider phone although when sliding out the “keyboard” on the right of the device, it doesn’t reveal a keyboard. Instead a large speaker can be seen which indicates the phone is more of a media based smartphone than a new Tytn model. [Read more…]

Dell Aero Android Smartphone Available Today

Dell has today launched the new Dell Aero smartphone. The Aero is an Android based smartphone that has a 3.5 inch screen.

The phone it’s self costs either $299.99 without a contract or $99.99 with a two year agreement with AT&T [T].

The press release makes no mention of which version of Android it is running, but unfortunately we found out that it’s just Android 1.5 for some bizarre reason that we have yet to figure out. There is no mention of any Android 2.1 or 2.2 update in the near future either. [Read more…]
