Apple Respond to DMCA Jailbreak Exemption – Warranty Will be Void

Yesterday, iPhone jailbreaking was made legal by a new DMCA exception ruling. Apple [AAPL] has now made an official response about the ruling and essentially say that your warranty will be void if doing it.

‘Apple’s goal has always been to insure that our customers have a great experience with their iPhone and we know that jailbreaking can severely degrade the experience. As we’ve said before, the vast majority of customers do not jailbreak their iPhones as this can violate the warranty and can cause the iPhone to become unstable and not work reliably.

Android Sales in UK Rise 350 Percent

Android from Google [GOOG] is picking up quite a bit in the UK from what we are hearing today. Analysts GfK Retail and Technology is today reporting that sales of Android are up 350 percent from numbers taken in the 1st quarter.

Android’s share of the UK mobile contract market was three percent in Q1 rising to 13.2 percent in quarter two of this year.

UK Android Smartphone Sales Rise By 350 Percent during the period sales of all mobile contract phones rose by just one percent, whilst sales of Android smartphones rose by a massive 350 percent.

AT&T Upload Speed Fix Incoming

AT&T [T] is in the process of deploying a patch that will fix the problem of slow upload speeds on the iPhone 4 and laptop modems. A glitch occurred on the AT&T network a few weeks back that prevented HSUPA speeds from being achieved. AT&T has limited users to UMTS speeds although when the patch rolls out, the restriction will be removed.

According to Yahoo!, the problem is only effecting 2 percent of it’s mobile user base. The fix is being applied to some network equipment from Alcatel and will be deployed over the next 2 to 3 weeks. If successful, faster upload speeds will be achievable. [Read more…]

iPhone 4 Canada Model to be SIM Free

Apple [AAPL] is launching the iPhone 4 in Canada this Friday. As well as Canada getting the iPhone 4 this Friday, another 16 countries will also be able to pick up the new phone.

Just like users in the UK, iPhone 4 customers in Canada will be able to opt to purchase the phone SIM free and unlocked. This will allow the phone to work on any of the Canadian GSM carriers allowing the customer to choose a SIM only plan.

Price wise, the iPhone 4 16GB model will cost $659 CAD and $779 for the 32GB model. This is the equivalent of $637 and $753 USD. [Read more…]

Android OS To get Carrier Billing

Android users will soon be getting the ability to use carrier billing when purchasing apps through the app store. The details come from the new Google Android terms and conditions that indicate an easier method to pay for apps will be used.

When purchasing an application the amount, in the future, will appear on your carrier’s monthly statement and be taken by whatever method you pay for your monthly plan charges. [Read more…]

iPhone 4 to Land on T-Mobile UK this Friday – Rumour

Pocket-Lint has received a tip indicating that T-Mobile in the UK could be launching the iPhone 4 on it’s network. The tip comes from someone who has been right about T-Mobile related things in the past.

The message came via Twitter and said…”@Pocketlint just had it confirmed. 30th of July on t-mobile for iphone4, not on pay as you though”.

Right now there are no prices available at T-Mobile. It is also unknown what stock levels they will have and if they will follow the likes of O2 and provide the iPhone 4 for current customers only. [Read more…]

iPhone 4 Launches in 17 Countries on Friday

Apple [AAPL] is launching the iPhone 4 this Friday in 17 more countries. The countries where the iPhone 4 is landing includes Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, New Zealand, Singapore, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland. This adds to the current five countries which are the UK, US, France, Germany and Japan.

Prices haven’t been revealed yet, but we suspect they will fall somewhere between the US and UK pricing in most places. Mobile Crunch suspects prices in Australia will be $1000 AUD for the 32GB model which works out at about £20 cheaper than the iPhone 4 32GB UK price of £599. [Read more…]

Android Playstation Emulator Now Available

Google Android smartphones are now able to play original Playstation games thanks to a new emulator that has been launched called PSX4Droid.

The new Android Playstation Emulator works best with high end smartphones such as the Droid, Nexus One and other more recent devices that have a 1GHz Snapdragon processor. The downside is that the emulator, on some games, is pushing smartphones quite hard and the Droid looks to struggle a little whilst running Need for Speed. [Read more…]

HTC Windows Phone 7 Device Spotted

Engadget over the weekend, managed to get some pictures of a HTC smartphone running Windows Phone 7. The device has a 3.7 inch SLCD screen along with a 1GHz Snapdragon processor and an 8 megapixel camera.

The three buttons that can be seen under the screen are touch sensitive just like the Nexus One and are function as a back, windows and search button which falls in line with the three buttons Microsoft [MSFT] require on Windows Phone 7 smartphones.

The device is apparently ready in terms of the hardware although the software appears to be not finished in that there is no skinning with just the basic information showing. [Read more…]

HTC Sense UI Could Land on Windows Phone 7

Several weeks ago, Microsoft [MSFT] announced that there would be no third party UI enhancements to Windows Phone 7 which in turn, would give every Windows Phone 7 user the same experience in terms of the UI regardless of what smartphone they are using.

We heard today though that HTC still plans on making some UI enhancements that will see a version of HTC Sense used on Windows Phone 7. In an interview, Drew Bamford of HTC said…

‘Microsoft has taken firmer control of the core experience, meaning that the Sense UI couldn’t be fully integrated into Windows Phone 7 devices, but that they would ‘augment the OS with extra functionality, which he remained tight-lipped about.

Nokia N8 on T-Mobile UK is Coming Soon

Nokia is launching the N8 soon. Vodafone already has a coming soon page up for the N8 from about 2 months ago and yet, it still hasn’t arrived on their network.

T-Mobile has now also put up a coming soon page for the N8 and just as the Vodafone page, it mentions no specific release date.

Previously we heard that the release date of the Nokia N8 was August 25 which is about a month away still. Nokia need to get this phone out sooner rather than later though as it seems it was leaked far too early which isn’t always a good thing for a new smartphone. [Read more…]

BBC iPad and iPhone News App Launched

The BBC has launched a new iPad and iPhone app for BBC News that brings current news to the devices.

With the app being created by/for the BBC, it has no ads and is free to download. The application it’s self works well. On the iPhone version you get a list of the current news stories by category on a side scrolling carousel. The categories can be moved around as well as deleted from the top of the page if not required. When clicking a story, it opens up to display the text as found on the BBC News site. An additional feature includes the ability to play video through the application. When visiting the BBC News site in Safari, you lose the flash elements. [Read more…]
