iPhone 4 Review Roundup

The iPhone 4 has already been torn apart by iFixit thanks to UPS or FedEx delivering some iPhone 4’s a couple of days early. Reviews of the iPhone 4 are now online.

Out of all the reviews we noticed the call dropping problem hadn’t totally gone away. All Things D said that the phones biggest downfall was with the AT&T network and even recommended carrying a second phone with you on another network if you wanted an iPhone but needed to make calls more than using data.

The iPhone 4 review at USA Today concludes…

Cutting through the hype, Apple has given longtime diehards, and first-time iPhone owners, plenty to cheer about.

iOS 4 Jailbreak Now Available

If you have upgraded your Apple [AAPL] iPhone and want to jailbreak iOS 4 then the iPhone DevTeam now have some software that can do just that.

The DevTeam has released Pwnage Tool 4.01 that can jailbreak iOS 4 under certain conditions. It will successfully jailbreak iPhone 3G and 3GS models, but does not support iPhone 2G, iPod Touch and the iPod Touch 3G. Also there’s a few problems/caveats when jailbreaking the iPhone which you can see listed below. Make sure you take a read and study the rules before trying to jailbreak the device. [Read more…]

iPhone 4 Teardown

Before the official launch date, iFixit managed to legally get hold of an iPhone 4 to teardown so they could reveal what’s inside the production model.

The iFixit team had someone fly out to Japan to pick up an iPhone 4 first, but as UPS has been delivering iPhone 4’s early to some customers, they managed to borrow one from someone in Silicon Valley.

The teardown reveals that there is 512MB of RAM in this iPhone 4. Previous leaked models were believed to have 256MB, so the double amount seems to be a last minute decision. [Read more…]

Google Android 2.2 Froyo Delays Should be Fixed Soon

Google [GOOG] demonstrated Android 2.2 Froyo about a month ago. When it was first announced the company said that they expect it to be available for Nexus One owners in the next few weeks. A thread over at Google now has over 1275 responses with people asking when it will be available.

Finally a Google employee chimed in and gave the following information…

Hey guys,
Just dropping in to let you know that the FRF72 build that is floating around is not the official update. The Android team is feverishly working to get a final version out the door, but like passion-ate has mentioned this will only happen once a release candidate meets our quality criteria.

Since today is the Summer Solstice, we know things will be heating up a bit so hopefully Froyo will be on its way shortly. Thanks for your continued patience!

iPhone 4 units getting Delivered Today

We mentioned earlier today that it appeared that the iPhone 4 from Apple [AAPL] could be landing early in the US. We expected some to show up tomorrow which would make it a day early. However, it looks like some are being delivered today. A few photos have been sent in to Engadget that show an iPhone 4 being unboxed.

It is unclear why the iPhone 4 is shipping early in the US although some believe it could be related to potential activation issues after all the pre-ordering issues that happened last week. By letting some out early it could space the load out on the Apple and AT&T [T] servers making the official launch day run a little smoother. [Read more…]

iOS 4 Terms and Conditions Reveal Privacy Changes

iOS 4 became available yesterday for download and with that download comes a new privacy policy which by default, lets Apple track where you are and provides that real time information to partners and licensees. What this means is that the new ad system, iAd can be use your location data to customise ads on your phone.

iAd does have an “opt-out” policy allowing you to not send your location based data to the company. In doing so you’ll still see iAd ads, but the relevance of the ads will be dropped a little and wont work based on location. [Read more…]

iPhone 4 Boxed at Walmart

Walmart appears to have received it’s batch of iPhone 4’s ready for sale on June 24.

The iPhone 4 pictured above (and below) shows what the box will look like when you can get your hands on it in a couple of days time.

The CDMA written on the box in the background is not an iPhone box, but rather an LG 290C which Walmart also stocks. We didn’t want you to get excited too quickly that a version for other carriers was being made available for launch. [Read more…]

Why the iPhone 3G Lacks Backgrounds in iOS 4

Yesterday saw a pretty big launch in terms of OS upgrades. iOS 4 was introduced for iPhone 3G, 3GS as well as newer gen iPod Touch devices.

The 3GS managed to get all the features working but the 3G lacks a few things. One of the big ones was multitasking which we have known about for a long time. Another feature is backgrounds. This is one that a number of people couldn’t figure out as it is thought that using backgrounds wouldn’t require much from the iPhone 3G.

A Gizmodo reader called Erica decided to ask the top man himself, Steve Jobs at Apple [AAPL] about why this is the case… [Read more…]

HTC Mozart Windows Phone 7 – (Photoshopped)

Over on XDA-Developers a picture was posted showing a poster of the HTC Mozart running Windows Phone 7 and coming in October this year.

The picture, larger below, is actually a badly photoshopped HTC Desire with Windows Phone 7 kind of stretched partly over the screen. However, the poster is real and seems to confirm that the HTC Mozart with WP7 is landing in a few months time.

Conflipper also chipped in on the thread by saying the HTC Mozart does exist and that it is coming to T-Mobile in the US as well as Telstra. [Read more…]

iOS 4 Jailbreak Arrives for iPhone 3G and iPod Touch 2G

The iPhone DevTeam yesterday launched a new unlock for iOS 3.1.3 that allows any iPhone running the now older OS to unlock the phone.

As well as releasing an unlock for the older 3.1.3 iOS, the team also launched the iOS 4 Jailbreak. The Jailbreak is only compatible on iPod Touch second gen and the iPhone 3G (not the 3GS just yet). We are expecting that the 3GS will be jailbroke soon though.

As with all iOS jailbreaks in the past, Redsn0w makes it simple in that you tether your phone, load up a program and the jailbreak is applied. [Read more…]
