Motorola Android Smartphone with 2GHz CPU Could Launch This Year

Motorola has announced that they are working on building a Google Android based smartphone that will come with a 2GHz CPU. That’s double what we normally see on Android devices with the usual CPU being the 1GHz Snapdragon.

The information came from the CEO of Motorola (Sanjay Jha) who mentioned the details at a speech in Chicago.

What also comes as a surprise is that Motorola will be launching the handset by the end of this year which will potentially make it the most powerful smartphone on the market. [Read more…]

HTC DROID Incredible has been Rooted

The HTC DROID Incredible has now been rooted. The root was done by the guys at Unrevoked.

However, it doesn’t seem like a particular easy root to do, so if you are not an experienced Android user it might be best to wait a little longer for an improved, or should I say a more user friendly tool to launch.

Some details of the root can be found over at XDA Developers and we recommend you take a good read of the posts within that thread to get an idea of what you need to do. [Read more…]

iPhone 4 UK Price – O2 Reveal Tariffs, 1GB Data Limit and no Handset Price Yet

O2 is slowly pushing out information each day ready for the iPhone 4 UK launch. However, we still do not know the iPhone 4 UK price just yet. Good news (or not so good when we go in to more detail) is that the iPhone 4 UK O2 tariffs are now online. The bad news is that the limits for data usage are quite strict in that the top plan limits you to just 1GB of data per month.

The tariffs offered come in 18 or 24 month durations with the 24 month cheapest plan being £25/month. For that you get 100 minutes, unlimited texts and 500MB of data.

The higher end 18 and 24 month contracts see you paying up to £65/month (18 month) or £60/month (24 month) but each of those plans restricts you to just 1GB of data per month although you do get unlimited minutes and texts out of that plan. [Read more…]

Nokia C7 Pictures Leak

The Nokia C7 has been revealed thanks to a leaked picture. The device falls in to the C-Series of smartphones and with it having a higher number after the C, it indicates that it’s approaching the top end of the C-Series range of phones.

Features on the device include an 8 megapixel camera including dual-flash, a 3.5 inch capacitive touchscreen, face detection, multi-touch and stereo speakers. We also hear that the device will run Symbian^3 OS.

Other devices that have been announced in the C-Series includes the C3 and C6 along with three C1 models announced just a few days ago. [Read more…]

iPhone 4 Retina Display attacked by Samsung

The Apple iPhone 4 retina display has come under attack from Samsung who argue that quadrupling the resolution of the iPhone screen would have little impact on the quality. Samsung quoted a three to five percent increase in clarity.

Samsung also commented that the IPS screen used by Apple [AAPL] could also drain the battery as much as 30 percent. The Super AMOLED screen used on the Galaxy S is said to be better in that it doesn’t require the battery draining backlight of the IPS screen. The AMOLED screen also has true black and more accurate colours making it look better all around and from all viewing angles.

Although Samsung has attacked Apple on this (of course they would with the launch of the Galaxy S), the AMOLED screen isn’t without it’s flaws either such as problems in daylight and high cost to produce. [Read more…]

iPhone 4 UK Coming to Three

The Three network in the UK has stepped up by now saying it will also offer the iPhone 4 in the UK when it launches. The network joins the other four main networks in the UK which are O2, Orange, T-Mobile and Vodafone.

Just like the other four networks, the iPhone 4 UK on Three has yet to receive pricing details although we expect to hear within the next few days, possibly tomorrow in preparation for the June 15 pre-orders starting.

The only network who seems to be hinting on the iPhone 4 UK price at the moment is O2 who has created a micro site with details on how much you pay to get out of your contract. We also have seen some hints that O2’s pricing will follow that of the iPhone 3GS when that launched. [Read more…]

iPhone 4 FaceTime 3G Could come to Jailbroken Devices

The Apple iPhone 4 has a number of new features one of which is FaceTime. FaceTime allows you to video call from iPhone 4 to iPhone 4. However, there is currently a restriction on the iPhone 4 preventing it from working over a 3G connection.

Musclenerd commented on twitter a couple of days ago that one reason to jailbreak the iPhone 4 would be to disable the WiFi only restriction on the iPhone 4.

Apple just gave whole new reason to jailbreak iPhone 4: to trick FaceTime video chat to use 3G (not restrict to wifi)

Google Confirm 11 More Countries for Google Maps Navigation

Earlier today we mentioned that Google Maps Navigation was landing in Canada and a number of countries in main land Europe. Google [GOOG] has now confirmed exactly what countries will receive the free navigation service.

In total, 11 more countries have been added which includes (on version 4.2) Austria, Belguim, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain and Switzerland.

To run Google Maps Navigation it requires that you are running Google Android 1.6 or higher. [Read more…]

Get the iPhone 4 UK Cheaper by Recycling your old 3G, 3GS

If Apple [AAPL] impressed you enough to grab an iPhone 4 in the next couple of weeks then you might be able to save a bit of money by selling your old phone back to O2.

We don’t yet know the iPhone 4 UK price, but we are hearing rumours that it will fall in line with what the iPhone 3GS prices were recently ie, if you pay more per month and commit for longer you’ll get it for free and then the lower you commit, it will cost more out right.

On to the O2 deal, we noticed recently that they have a recycling scheme going on and the prices they are willing to pay back are not bad at all. Looking at the prices we see that the iPhone 3GS 32GB fetches up to £253 while the 16GB 3GS will pay you £240. [Read more…]

Apple iPhone 4 UK – O2 Early Upgrade Details Announced

The Apple iPhone 4 is launching in just a couple of weeks. However, the iPhone 4 UK pricing has yet to be revealed. What we do have though is details for those on O2 network wanting to upgrade to the iPhone 4.

O2 suggest three ways to get an iPhone 4. The first is to take advantage (or disadvantage?) of their early upgrade offers. O2 is offering those with a current O2 contract the ability to upgrade early for a “small” fee. The O2 early upgrade calculator can be found here and from what we can figure out, it seems to add £20/month for each month you have left on your contract although if your contract ends before August you won’t pay any extra fees. After that, each month ads an extra £20 to the cost of upgrade, so if your contract ends 17 December this year, you’ll pay £100 inc VAT on top of what you pay for the iPhone 4. [Read more…]

Apple iPhone 4 – Skype Wants in on FaceTime Video Chat

When Apple [AAPL] announced the Apple iPhone 4 the other day, one of the new features called FaceTime was announced that would “finally” bring video calling to a mobile phone. However, we have seen this in the UK for maybe 7 or even 8 years now, but anyways!

We suspected the other day that companies like Skype would look to using or integrating with FaceTime that would allow video calls to reach beyond the current iPhone 4 to iPhone 4 requirement that is in place. If Skype could integrate it could allow the iPhone 4 to make video calls to millions of users on Skype and other video services.

Pocket-Lint spoke to Skype about this where they said it…

“would welcome the opportunity to work with Apple”, when it comes to enabling Skype video calls on the new iPhone 4.

Google Maps Navigation Hits Canada and Mainland Europe

Google [GOOG] has announced that Google Maps Navigation is now available for those in Canada and a number of places in mainland Europe.

The Google Maps Navigation service was previously available to just the US and UK, but the new version out today will allow you to navigate freely across more countries.

The reasons that Google could be doing this is possibly due to competition from Ovi Maps Navigation that has far more free navigation coverage than Google has. We wont know for sure and to be honest, we don’t really care what the reasons are. All we want is free satnav and Google as well as Ovi Maps can now provide that. [Read more…]
