iPhone 4 UK Price – How much will it be?

We have all the official details on the next generation Apple [AAPL] iPhone 4, but many are left wondering what the iPhone 4 UK price will be. We know the US pricing already, in that it’s $199 for a 16GB model for new contracts and those eligible for an upgrade, and $299 for the 32GB model. Prices are higher for those upgrading early, or for those purchasing a no commitment device AKA PAYG in the UK.

Over here in the UK, we have four networks who have all announced that they will be selling the iPhone 4. These include O2, Orange, Vodafone and T-Mobile. What we hope to see is some competitive pricing where we will see the iPhone 4 going for free on the higher end contracts and getting progressively more expensive as you spend less per month, or commit to a shorter contract length. For those of you running a T-Mobile myTouch 3G, there is good news for you in that you will be able to upload the Google [GOOG] os Android 2.2 Froyo on to your device in the near future.

Right now the details only say that it is “coming soon” rather than providing an exact date or even month. Lets just hope soon is soon in that you might see it by the end of the month, or early next month.

A few more details of what’s included in the Android 2.2 myTouch 3G update can be found below. [Read more…]

iPhone 4 Retina Display

One of the big features of the Apple iPhone 4 is the new display that Apple [AAPL] calls the “Retina Display”. Since the screen plays a huge part in how you interact with the iPhone 4, it makes sense that Apple has opted for the highest resolution screen made to date on a smartphone.

The iPhone 4 screen manages to quadruple the number of pixels when compared to the iPhone 3GS and successfully packs in 960 x 640. Having 640 pixels across the 3.5 inch diagonal screen allows for the ppi (pixels per inch) to reach 326. Apple say that the human eye can only distinguish around 300 ppi which is why they give it the name of the Retina Display.

What the retina display does is allows graphics and text to look smooth at any size with no visible pixelation. It’s quite difficult to demonstrate the difference without actually holding an iPhone 4 in your hand along side an iPhone 3GS or other smart phone, but the picture above (larger below and even larger if you click on it) I think gives you a good idea of what is in store on the new iPhone 4. Nokia N8 Photography Capabilities Demonstrated on Video

Nokia [NOK] will be launching the Nokia N8 in August. The Nokia Conversations YouTube channel has a few videos uploaded with one of them detailing the Nokia N8 photo editing along with the video editing functions of the device.

The video shows a few examples of how to browse through photos and although not the most exciting of things to watch, it does move on to the video editing functions of the phone where transitions can be made between clips that have been combined together. The application actually looks very good and seems that with the mix of a high resolution camera and some nice transition features it could be a good selling point for the Nokia N8. [Read more…]

HTC EVO 4G Selling Well in the US

HTC [2498] seem to have done well with the HTC EVO 4G since it’s launch last Friday. BGR had a source tell them that “well over 200,000 units have been sold since launch”. That’s quite an impressive number and something Sprint [S] will be happy with on their 4G network.

The “well over 200,000” could be just an estimation and not based on actual numbers although the successful launch that was widely reported on over the weekend with some reports saying that the HTC EVO 4G outdid the Palm Pre launch a while back. [Read more…]

Apple iOS 4 Jailbreak for 3GS Already Complete

Yesterday Apple [AAPL] released the renamed iOS 4 GM (formerly iPhone OS 4.0) to developers. After only a day a developer has managed to create PwnageTool bundles for the iPhone 3GS iOS 4 GM download allowing users to jailbreak their iPhone 3GS whilst preserving the baseband so that the device can be unlocked.

If you are an advanced iPhone user then you might want to go ahead now and apply the iOS 4 GM jailbreak although we recommend just hanging on a bit longer as the iPhone Dev Team have promised a jailbreak and unlock this month for iOS 4. [Read more…]

iWork for iPhone 4 Accidentally confirmed

Apple [AAPL] appears to have accidentally confirmed the existence of iWork for the iPhone 4, or perhaps iOS 4 which would also bring it to the iPhone 3G and 3GS.

The image seen above shows iWork running on the iPhone 4 particularly when it mentions to open in Keynote. The image was captured a few hours ago but has since been removed from the Apple [AAPL] site indicating that the company are not quite ready to launch the application, or worst case, that it was just a mock up image to see what it could look like. We are inclined to believe the former rather than the latter and expect to see details soon from Apple. [Read more…]

Apple iPhone 4 UK Launch on T-Mobile

T-Mobile today became the forth carrier to announce it will be offering the Apple iPhone 4 in the UK in the next couple of weeks.

As with the other three carriers, no pricing has been made available yet although we expect that T-Mobile, Orange, O2 and Vodafone will all announce prices either on or before June 15 when pre-orders open up for the new device.

For those unaware, Apple [AAPL] announced the iPhone 4 yesterday morning at WWDC along with a launch date of June 24 across five countries. Only US pricing is currently available which indicates on AT&T that a 16GB iPhone 4 will cost $199 with a 2 year contract or $299 for the 32GB iPhone 4 model. [Read more…]

Apple iPhone 4 Antenna Could fix Dropped Call Problems

If you watched the D8 interview last week with Steve Jobs, you might have noticed a question about dropped calls and call availability. Steve said something along the lines of reception “should be getting a lot better soon” on the AT&T network. We first thought that this was all related to AT&T making changes to their network and upgrading it across the US, but after watching the WWDC keynote yesterday, we noticed a lot of information was given about the new antennas included on the iPhone 4. It appears that both Apple [AAPL] and AT&T are working on fixing the issues.

You might have noticed that there are 3 gaps in the stainless steel band that wraps around the edges of the iPhone. These are not a design flaw, but rather a feature of the phone that separates the stainless steel band in to three sections that makes the whole structure of the phone act as antenna. The left side section of band handles the GPS, Bluetooth and WiFi connectivity while the right side band and lower band (that also stretches over the top of the device) handles UMTS and GSM connectivity. Having the whole structure of the phone act as an antenna should hopefully give a stronger signal and hence, fewer dropped calls or fewer “searching” messages that often show up in the status bar. Apple iTunes 9.2 Features

Apple [AAPL] will be launching iTunes 9.2 soon. Right now it is available to those in the developers program only and will be tested and launched we suspect within the next week or so.

iTunes 9.2 has a number of features which includes the ability to connect to the iPhone 4, syncing abilities of the iPhone, iPod Touch and iOS 4 with iBooks 1.1. PDF document organisation is included.

iOS 4 brings folders to the iPhone 4, 3GS and 3G. The new iTunes 9.2 brings the folder features to iTunes allowing you manage your applications and folders in iTunes to sync them to the iPhone. The iOS 4 release date is June 21 which we suspect that iTunes 9.2 will be made ready either the same time, or a few days before. [Read more…]

iPhone 4 UK Coming to Vodafone, Orange and O2

The iPhone 4 UK launch is scheduled for June 24 here in the UK. Three networks so far have confirmed that they will be selling the iPhone 4 on launch day. These networks include Orange, O2 and Vodafone. Carphonewarehouse will also be offering the iPhone 4 although they sell for other networks rather than owning their own network.

Unfortunately pricing for the UK iPhone 4 has not been revealed yet although Geeky Gadgets has made a few estimates based on pricing + tax when compared to the subsidised versions over at AT&T. Estimations indicate that we could be getting the iPhone 4 in the UK for £169 for the 16GB version and £249 for the 32GB version although with the vast array of tariffs we have in the UK, we probably will see a free model on the higher end price range with prices varying in between for the amount you are willing to commit each month. Microsoft Windows Phone 7 Marketplace Policies Tweaked

Microsoft [MSFT] has made a few changes to the Windows Phone 7 Marketplace policies that actually give a better deal to developers. It isn’t clear why Microsoft has done this other than probably tempting more developers to develop with less restricted guidelines.

Before these changes were made there was a restriction on how many apps could be submitted per year under the developers licence. That limit was set at 5 application per year for the $99 payment to be in the developers system. This has now changed to allow for unlimited paid apps to be submitted with a restriction of 5 free apps per year. Once the 5 free apps limit has been reached you can pay $19.99 per free application till the end of the year when it renews with another 5 free submissions. [Read more…]
