TomTom Sat Nav now with Speech Recognition

TomTom GO
TomTom is a cool sat nav. I have been using TomTom for a few years now and impressed with the quality of maps and how easy it allows you to navigate right to a particular address. In effort to increase the ease of use the latest TomTom GO 720 and 520 are to offer speech recognition. I am a bit worried about how well this will actually work though. From first hearing about this I wonder if it will be like Transcriber on the PocketPC which works… kind of. Another feature of TomTom GO 720 and 520 which looks to be very useful is the TomTom Map Share feature which allows updates to be made to maps by users. If a new road is built then it can be added to the map and then shared with everyone else so that no new maps are needed. POI can also be shared through this system.

Bluetooth is built in allowing you to use it as a hands free kit for your mobile phone allowing you to safely take calls while driving.

If this is the correct model then it will run Windows Mobile 5, have a 2.8 inch QVGA screen which is touchscreen. The processor is a 300MHz Samsung. On the connectivity side it can connect via Bluetooth, Wifi and it has GPS built in. This is not a bad little package from Acer.

No other details are available at the moment, but I do believe that details over the next week or 2 should start flowing in. When they do I will post more.

It has a fairly large screen and looks to be one great phone. But, it is concept at the moment so I have no idea if the domino phone will be made available. It was designed by a Syntes Studio based in Sweden and appart from the picture above and the one after the jump we have no more information on this phone.

Charge your Mobile with a Wind up Torch

Wind Up Torch
If you enjoy camping and have a wind up torch then you might be able to make some modifications that allow it to charge your mobile phone. The wind up torch (or flashlight) in the video after the jump can generate around 4V of power when you crank the handle. Mixing this together with a Nokia car charger can allow you to generate enough power to charge your phone, PDA and other electronic devices. Its quite a good idea for those who travel and want the mixture of a torch and charger in one. As it is a custom device there are no prices for this. If you do happen to hack away at your torch then just make sure you use the correct testing equipment so that you do not damage the torch or electronic device.

Microsoft Surface Computer

Microsoft Surface Computer
The Microsoft Surface Computer is a pretty cool device. It allows you to interact with your phone, camera and other devices through a surface type screen mounted in a table. The screen is multi touch allowing for greater interactivity between you and the computer. Sensors under the surface can detect when a device is placed on to the screen. Once the device is detected you can drag and drop images, video or appointments on to the device and all the connectivity is taken care of through wireless signals. If you have a photo you just took at a party and someone wants a copy then just place the camera and a phone on it and drag the picture across and the rest is taken care of.

Making use of a dynamic and interactive surface has many uses. A whiteboard could be kept on the wall or work surface in the kitchen and recipes could be downloaded, transferred for example.

The device will not primarily be made available to end users though for the home. It will mainly be directed towards shops and presentations. It could allow for easier browsing of an online catalogue for example.
