Sega Mega Drive iPod Dock

megadrive-26Wired came across an old beat up Sega Mega Drive and decided to tear it down to see what was exactly inside. The Japanese model had the cartridge lock (a flimsy bit of plastic that just bent if a UK/US cartridge was put in) and had the reddish highlight around the power LED.

Interestingly enough, they decided to take the main board out and put a regular iPod dock inside. The iPod dock was taped up and fit quite well as there is tons of space inside the casing. [Read more…]

A couple of images from the source code have been compiled and are available with one ready on Bit Torrent for download and another over at Gdgt. Just as a precaution, just create a new GMail account if you want to test the OS out just in case (a slim chance) that any of the downloads have been tampered with.

To get the OS working you need to download and install VirtualBox which allows the virtual OS to run. [Read more…]

crunchpadOn a recent broadcast of the Gillmor Gang videocast Mike Arrington was asked about the Crunchpad which we really haven’t heard of much recently. According to Mike, the crunchpad is steamrolling with a lot of development being done this past month on the software. When launched (no dates yet), the crunchpad is expected to cost $300 – $400 and will be supported by sponsorships. Mike was quick to point out that the sponsorships would not be intrusive perhaps just like the firefox google search sponsorships. The device is also a web browser only device that’s aimed at a market to allow users to sit in front of the TV while catching up on news and youtube, watching video etc…

The video also mentions battery power with Mike saying they expect it to be good, and as they look in to other technologies such as OLED they can make battery life better. Conversation also spoke of colour e-ink and perhaps a future in that with a particular company expecting colour e-ink to be available next year.
