HP 2133 UMPC – Very Nice

hp-2133-LaptopHP are launching a seriously nice looking UMPC named the 2133. The screen is just 8.9 inches which is ample for a UMPC and it is scratch resistant. The resolution it runs at is 1366 x 766 (WXGA). An ExpressCard/54 slot can be found in there along with Wireless LAN, a QWERTY keyboard that is not much smaller then normal and a web cam can also be found integrated too.

Two operating systems will be available when it launches which gives you the choice between Vista or Linux. On the storage side, it appears that there will be an SSD option which will make the UMPC weigh in at 2.5 LBS. The case looks to also look nice too being anodized aluminium.

I wonder how this will do against the MacBook Air and EeePC. Looking at rumours of prices, it looks like it could sell for less then $700. If that’s the case this will be on my wanted list.

Floppy Disk Drive with built in Memory Card Reader

floppy_disk_drive_card_readerA rather strange combination of computer hardware has just become available. It mixes a 7-in-1 card reader with a floppy drive. This allows you to quickly (as quick as floppy drives work) transfer files from your old floppies over to memory card. The problem I have is that any floppy disks I have now do not work any more, and if they did, I still would not have a use for them as I haven’t tested them for maybe 8 years now.

Although I do like the converging of gadgets, I just do not get the point of mixing something this old with something a lot more modern.

150 Games on the Table Top Arcade Machine

tabletop-arcadeBack in the 80’s, arcade games were starting to become big. Atari, Namco and Midway were amongst the big names producing games like Pac-Man, Centipede, Tempest, Gauntlet and a ton of other classics. This Tabletop Arcade Machine brings all these games in to your home on just the 1 machine. It has 150 of the beauties built in and displays them on a crisp 19″ flat screen LCD. On the arcade machine you will find an 8 direction joystick, 11 large buttons, a 3 inch trackball which together, bring the 80’s back in to your home. The good news is that there is a PC running the show (that might not be good news to some). What this means is you can easily upgrade, add games and make as many mods as you want. Music in MP3 format can be sent and sound is produced by 2 speakers and a sub woofer.

The machine measures 24 x 22 x 24 inches and can be purchased for $2495.95 from Hammacher Schlemmer.

PenandMouse – LED Light, Mouse and Note Taker

penandmouseThe PenandMouse comes from Korea and was created by ISV. Supplied with the pen is a 2.4GHz wireless dongle and a mouse pad which allows it to communicate with your PC for up to 10 hours of non stop use with 10 days of standby. The pen has a number of functions which allow it to act as a 3 button mouse (with scroll wheel), a standalone memo taker which will store in it’s memory the things you write which can then be transferred to your PC at a later date. The pen is fairly small in size and not much bigger then an average pen which makes it useful to travel with when using your laptop. The LED lamp built in allows the mouse pen to be used in dark places while keeping your work illuminated. Another handy feature is the presentation pointer that is built in. All around it appears to be a very handy little device and it will be interesting to see how easy the switch back to a pen shaped mouse is.

Is Apple building a handheld Game System?

apple-games-console
I wasn’t expecting to hear of a patent by Apple with them jumping in to the hand-held gaming arena. The recent application speaks of toys, games and playthings and refers to hand-held units for playing electronic games. This patent interestingly enough follows on from a multi-touch gaming interface also which got many people’s attention.

Apple are doing well with their product launches and maybe this multi touch gaming device could become a PSP beater. No doubt this will spark rumours all over the web followed with artists impressions of what this “iGame” device could look like.

Wireless Networking for Hardcore Gamers

linksys-gaming-router
Gamers hate to see lag on their networks. Lag lowers their chances of becoming champion of their chosen game. To fix this problem, Linksys have created an out of the box Wireless Gaming Router named the WRT330N which is optimised specifically for gamers. Built-in wireless runs up to IEEE 802.11n (draft) speeds and the 4 wired switch ports will allow up to Gigabit Ethernet speeds. These alone should sort out your home network problems. It doesn’t stop there though and Linksys has also added QoS (Quality of Service) which is pre configured to prioritize traffic on ports that are needed for online gaming. This setup ensures that no problems are present on your home network. All you need to then worry about is making sure you have a good enough broadband connection to not get a bottle neck as it leaves the router.

The price tag is a little higher then your average wireless router, but for $159.99 you are getting a top quality wireless gaming router which should see your online gaming experience improved.

Amazing Golf Simulator

full-swing-golf
If you have a spare $55 grand to spare as well as a 20 x 13 x 10.5 feet room spare then this golf simulator is perfect for you. It allows you to practise your golfing skills from the comfort of your own home. The large screen is powered by a windows based PC which can take you around many golf courses from around the world at the touch of a button. The large picture is projected on to screen which can take the force of a golf ball hitting it. Two 360 degrees curtains of infra-red beams emit 60000 pulses per second and can track the trajectory, speed and other details about the ball you actually just hit.

It does look seriously cool and would fit well in to my home although I do lack the space and money. Oh well! Enjoy the video below.

Nano Bluetooth Dongle

Nano-Bluetooth-Dongle
If a bluetooth transmitter/receiver can fit in your phone then why do USB Bluetooth dongles need to stick out the side of your PC a couple of inches? The nano bluetooth dongle sorts that problem out. It is about the size of a British pound coin and only protrudes enough so it can be taken out of your PC or laptop. This means that it does not need to be removed for travel. It is dubbed as a “plug it and forget it” device. Although it’s very small it does not lack features either and has V2.0 of Bluetooth with EDR.

PC Car Stereo

PC Car Stereo
The Navisurfer II is a complete PC which replaces your car stereo. The screen is 7 inches and runs at an 800 x 480 resolution. The screen slides out from the single DIN stereo and flips up to reveal either Windows XP or a Linux distro. The software running on Windows is configured especially for in car use which means you will see GPS navigation, media player, video player and a cool diagnostics piece of software which can show various things from your engine. Not only do you have the basics in there, you can also hook up other devices such as video cameras for reversing, controllers for playing games and it has USB connectivity too. The spec of the Navisurfer II isn’t too shabby either. A few variations are available which have from 40GB to 120GB of hard disk, 256Mb to 512MB RAM and prices are from $578 to $656.

PC Car Stereo View
