Philips Readius

While watching the TV tonight I came across a quick review of the Philips Readius. It was good to see a video of this device actually working and I was impressed with the results. Yes, it’s only gray scale currently, but given time a nice colour solution will be out and roll up screens will be the norm soon after that. The next few years are going to be very interesting.

Panasonic 103″ HD Screen

This TV is huge. It’s the new panasonic 103″ high definition screen. The TH-103PF9 is over 6 feet wide and has full 1920 x 1080 HD resolution. The price is expected to be in the $70k range and needs to be professionally installed due to the size and weight of it.

The display was powered by a blu-ray drive in the video below and the colours and size were very impressive.

Hermes with White LED’s

Geardiary reviewed the Hermes Dopod recently and one down side that was mentioned was the blue LED’s used behind the keys. Well, someone wasnt afraid to take it apart and geardiary have reported on a Hermes with white LED’s lighting up the keyboard. I have to say it does look rather good!

GranTurismo 5

Sony have also revealed online and network services provided through the PS3 which can offer some great functions for users and developers.

XMB (Xross Media Bar) is the way in to the Playstation network and this is the basis of the navigation system for the console. Through XMB you can access games, network and web connectivity and other media features such as audio and video. If you are a user of the Sony PSP (Playstation Portable) then you will be familier with how XMB works.

MotorStorm

The PS3 will be available as a 20Gb model and a 60Gb model retailing at $499 and $599 respectivly. It will come with the cell broadband engine, built in BD player, internal HDD as mentioned above, it will have HDMI output as standard (cable not included), a wireless controller known as SIXAXIS and network capability. It seems like the 60Gb model will include wifi only.

The controller costs $49.99 for the SIXAXIS. A memory card adapter is available for $14.99 which has the ability to transfer your PS2/PS1 saved games on to the harddrive of the PS3. The BD remote control will sell for $24.99.

BodyGard Micro Tool

The BodyGard micro tool is a keychain unit which can help you in several critical situations where you need to get out of your car. In the extremly compact device there is a glass breaker, seat belt cutter, 140dB panic alarm, bright flashing LED and an emergency red flashing light. Sounds cool. I want to try the glass smasher 🙂

BodyGard

When trapped in a vehicle you just strike the base of the device against the glass which releases a spring loaded steel pin. It will not release accidently. There is an attachment which uncovers the cutter to get you out of the seat belt if stuck.

The bodygard tool glows in the dark and is water resistant.

Solar Powered Radio

The solar powered radio uses the sun to keep it going. However, it does have a backup battery in there which is a AAA battery. It’s bascically just a standard AM/FM radio which can be tuned by way of roll overs located on each side of the device. The volume is also a manual control. The radio is small at 9 x 6.5 x 2cm. Coolest-gadgets have a size comparison on the link below which will show it next to a deck of cards.

Samsungs Ultraslim 17 inch Display

Aving reported on the Samsung 17″ ultra slim AMOLED display. This display is an active matrix / organic light emitting diode hybrid (AMOLED) and give bright vivid colours and very thin formfactor. The reason for this is that no back light is needed. This 17″ display is capable of 1600 x 1200 resolution and has an amazing response time of less then 0.01ms. It has 1000:1 contrast ration also. It isnt going to the market yet as it’s a concept device, but I will be getting my self one when it does 🙂

Siemens Road Sign Reader

This new technology from Siemens looks interesting. It is designed for your car and has a camera built in which reads road signs, processes the image, displays the speed on your screen and tells you if you are over or under the spead limit for that particular road. It makes me wonder if it can detect the good old national speed limit signs here in the UK which can mean either 60 or 70 depending on what type of road you are on 🙂

D-Link Xtreme N Gigabit Router (DIR-655)

D-Link announced their latest and greatest Xtreme N Gigabit router named the DIR-655. This new range of routers feature intelligent wireless QoS, Gigabit LAN and WAN ports, a wireless security wizard, network management software and other standard features also. The DIR-655 is 802.11n compliant and can deliver 14x faster speeds then the 802.11g which pushes it to ludicrous speed at the moment. Bear in mind that the 802.11n is draft at the moment. Also the range has been boosted 6 times which makes this one mighty powerful router.

Xtreme N Gigabit Router DIR-655

High Quality Features
Although the router is draft 802.11n compliant it is also backwards compatible with both 802.11g and 802.11b devices which means you do not need a whole new set of equipment to make use of this powerful device. With the speed of this router it makes wireless networking more desirable for transfering large amounts of files, music, video, printers and network storage. Of course the standards of encryption are included to help make your wireless network safer. The device has 3 external antennas and 4 ports running at 10/100/1000 speeds.

Intelligent QoS
When I first spotted intelligent QoS was included I wondered what it was capable of. A quick read over on D-Links site explained this clearly. Some routers route all wired and wireless traffic such as VoIP, video streaming, gaming and browsing as one stream of traffic all mixed together. Of course if you have VoIP this can sometimes cause an issue where it cannot have enough bandwidth provided for it to make the call clear.

Intelligent QoS sorts this out automatically and can sense what type of traffic is flowing. Anything that streams (VoIP, video streams etc..) is automatically given priority over items that do not stream (such as web browsing). This then prevents the choppyness that can be found on some other devices when overloaded.

Security
Wireless connections have always presented a security problem for homes and businesses. The problem is that a wireless connection is just like being able to tap directly in to a network cable, but with being in another building unspotted. Also there is the issue of packet sniffing and being able to crack WEP keys, or even worse… no encryption. The Xtreme range supports all the latest wireless security protocols which are WEP, WPA and WPA2 which encrypt your data to prevent attacks. The firewall built in also secures both SPI and NAT making the threat from the WAN port side be squashed.

Overall this looks like a nice step forwards in terms of performance on the speed side, network coverage (more appropriate for a large office) and security features.

Palm Sized Projector

Toshiba have introduced a palm sized LCD projector. The TDP-FF1AU weighs just 1.7lbs with a rechargeable battery attached. What stands out to me is that this thing fits on your palm, can run for 2 hours by battery. It has a rating of 400 lumens which is not huge, but this projectors size gives it a nice advantage. It also has an SVGA resolution of 800×600.
