Creative Zen V Plus

Creative have launched their new MP3 player called the Zen V Plus. This is a rather colourful small device aimed to take on the iPod nano. The MP3 player is flash based and comes in 3 flavours… 1Gb, 2Gb and 4Gb. There is a V plus and a V model which are $30 difference in price. The Plus sports an FM radio and video playback. Not a bad way to spend the extra $30. The battery was tested and lasts 15 hours (reports say 20) which still is quite handy. The screen is 1.5" but lacks the brightness to be still visibile outside. Overall it's a good challenger to the iPod.

Gateway E-100M / NX100X ultraportable

Gateway are introducing 2 very similar Ultra Portable laptops. They are both light and weigh in at 3.15 pounds and have a 12.1" screen. What I like about them is the nice magnesium body and are less then an inch thick. The also have wifi running at 801.11a/b/g and have BlueTooth built in also.

Dell have introduced an Ultra Portable to the market in the form of the D420. The nice small laptop features a 12.1" display and is supported by cingular or verizon in the US and vodafone overseas. It has wireless capabilities (who doesnt?) running on 802.11n ready as well as an interesting switch which can scan for wifi networks while the laptop is shut down and packed away. It comes with a nice 7 hour battery life and has an SD slot as well as the usual array of USB connections, firewire and other bits and bobs.

DALSA Semiconductore – 111 Mega Pixel Chip

News came in yesterday of a 111 Megapixel chip. I doubt we will be seeing 111 Megapixel digital cameras out too soon though although it's just a matter of time before they do appear.

The CCD is 4" square and can take a picture with the resolution of 10,560 x 10,560 pixels. Not bad!!! Not sure how quick it takes thse pictures because of the amount of data transferring. No doubt in a few years time a 111 mega pixel camera will be pretty standard in off the shelf cameras.

Cell Phone activated Car Starter

A student has filled for a patent on a device which is cell phone activated and can control door locking, car starting all from anywhere in the world. The idea seems legit. The system seems to work by calling up the car and tapping in a security code over your phone which will then access the relevant function and shut windows etc…

Spansion Mobile Phone Security

Spansion are concerned about mobiles being used more and more for tasks like paying for items. As phones become more smarter it increases the threats of virus and DOS attacks as well as stolen information because we might carry more data around then we ever have in the past.

HTC TyTN Smartphone

The HYC TyTN Smarphone is about to be released. This is the second smartphone from HTC and has some nice features. The phone has tri-band UMTS 3G, plus GSM, GPRS, EDGE, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and a mini-USB port. What I like more about the device is the sideways sliding out QWERTY keyboard which makes it easier to input entries rather then using the pen and tapping on a small keoyboard or handwriting recognition.
