Lego Bridge Launcher Vehicle can Built it’s Own Bridge

Check out this Lego bridge launcher. The Lego Bridge launcher was built by Mahjqa Kreuger who managed to build a Lego vehicle that is capable of deploying it’s own bridge across a gap, driving over it’s own bridge and then recovering the bridge afterwards.

It’s quite amazing to see the video of it working and how all the various parts move to get the bridge to open up correctly.

The video can be seen after the break which is then followed by a couple of out takes which are quite fun to watch. [Read more…]

Try a Watch on with Augmented Reality App

Over the last year or so we have seen more and more augmented reality applications that attempt to merge real and virtual worlds together. The latest augmented reality app is one that allows you to try on a watch.

The system works by printing out a paper watch with a “T” marking on it. When the 82MB application is downloaded and loaded up you simply wear the T marked paper watch and wave it in front of your webcam. You then just need to select the watch you want to virtually try on and it appears on your wrist.

The application is compatible with Windows and Mac and is available for download now over at Tissot. [Read more…]

HTC Patent Reveals new Thin Film Speaker System

HTC has applied for a couple of patents, both of which are related to thin film speakers and the implementation in to a smartphone.

The first is for the process of manufacturing an electret diaphragm that allows for the diaphragm in a loudspeaker to be much thinner making it possible to fit better speakers in a smart phone.

A method for manufacturing electret diaphragms is provided. First, a dielectric film is attached to a frame by an adhesive material and a fastening element grips the peripheral area of the dielectric film on the frame. Afterward, the dielectric film is subjected to a metal sputtering process to form a conductive material layer thereon. Finally, the dielectric film is subjected to a polarizing process thereby forming an electret diaphragm.

Minput Multipoint Optical Tracking Device turns Small Devices in to Mice

Minput is a device that uses a couple of optical sensors to track movement on a device such as an MP3 player. By moving the device around, various menu functions can be accessed. By using optical sensors on a device such as an MP3 player or mobile phone, it gives you the option to use the device as its own computer mouse.

e.g., a matchbook-sized media player that is essentially all screen on its front side. The device could be operated using any convenient surface, e.g., a table or palm. The use of two tracking elements enables not only conventional x/y tracking, but also rotation, providing a more expressive design space. The latter motion is calculated by taking the difference in velocities of the two sensors.
