eInk Keypad Phone

eink-keypad-phone
This phone is a COOL idea which uses eInk to create a keypad. The benefit of this is that eInk doesn’t require battery power except when changing what is on the key. This will allow the keypad to be changed and to be a screen but with out draining the resources of the battery. Things to hope for are tactile feed back from the keys as tapping on a touch screen can sometimes be frustrating and even more so, for sending text messages.

The TVs in this car a little Excessive

in car TV
With the thin LCD type screens now being more affordable it has opened up a ton of uses. Over the last few years we have seen cars with screens in various places. It makes you wonder how many is too much in a car? If I was to have screens in a car I would probably stick a couple in the headrests for the kids to watch and one in the dash if it was for sat nav. I think this one above takes it a little too far though 😉 Surely the new UK highway code has something against this. What happened to the days of playing “I spy with my little eye” or singing “Who stole the cookie from the cookie jar?” Oh well, I guess those days are over. I wonder when cars will come standard and packed full of screens.

Choosing the right LED Belt Buckle

led belt buckle
According to belt-buckles.net, the LED belt buckle is the hottest thing in that industry right now. To be honest, I never realised that LED belt buckles were all the rage. Ive never seen one in real life. Anyway, choosing one needs a lot of care and attention so that you get exactly what you need. Belt-buckles came up with a list of things to look out for.

* The ability to store multiple messages
* The length of the message in characters (good ones allow up to 256 characters or more)
* The number of speed levels (speed your message displays)
* The number of brightness levels
* An accessible ON/OFF button
* Is is easily programmable and can you switch between messages easily
* There should be an instruction manual
* Batteries should be included

Sonys Bendable OLED Screen

Here is another short video showing Sonys OLED screen which measures just 0.3mm thick and is very flexible. In this clip you will see the screen bending while video is being displayed. Also an announcement that OLED displays will be available this year in Japan.

Casio 60FPS Digital Camera

Casio 60fps
This Casio is a prototype which is capable of capturing 60 frames per second at 6 mega pixels. If you jump back to VGA quality it can even record at 300 frames per second which allows capture of some cool stuff to play back in slow motion. The lens is capable of 12 x optical zoom which is a nice amount too allowing for some good shots at long distances. The camera has a 2.8 inch LCD screen and the CMOS sensor is believed to come from Sony and is a 1/1.8 inch sensor. The camera measures 127.5 x 79.5 x 130.9 mm and weighs 650 Grams.

No information is available yet on what storage is used and how the images are transferred.

Concept Brix Phone

Brix
The guys over at Yankodesign bring us another cool concept idea. This time it is the Brix phone in which the whole surface acts as a screen. To make it even better, the brix phones are capable of being connected together to make larger screens as pictured above. When connecting them together, one of them acts as the media hub for all devices. According to the designers there will be no limit to how many can be connected together and the restriction is only based on how many people you actually know who have them. Seems like a good idea although I think flexible displays will move quicker then this.

HIPerWall runs at 200 Million Pixels

HIPerWall
The HIPerWall pictured above is capable of displaying imagery at a 200 million pixel resolution. The display measures 23 ft wide by 9 feet tall and has 50 LCD panels which appear to be the Apple 30 inch cinema displays. To make use of such a high resolution, a software app was developed and it allows Google Earth to be used on the HIPerWall. Previously, images had to be stitched together to get the huge, high resolution versions. They were not done in real time and had to be done manually which took a long time. Calit2 worked with Google to create software which could utilise the 50 displays in real time allowing researchers to do a huge amount of work and observation in a fraction of the time.

Sony Simplifies the Remote Control

Sony Simple Remotes

Sony makes a simple Remote Control for the Telly

If you look at your remote control you will probably notice a ton of features that are never used. Sony have decided to create the simple remote control which has the basic functions that you need. The RM-PZ1FD is pictured above and comes in 3 colours. Also, the remote control is waterproof I guess for those times you are relaxing in the bath watching your nice LCD screen. The remote controlls are being released in August and will set you back $21.

Font Clock

Font Clock

21st Century 24 Hour Clock

The Font Clock has 12 different font with which it can tell the time. The inside mechanisms are set to display random, mixed up displays of time in different fonts. I wonder if they have windings in there… that would make for a cool excuse why you were late for work (not being able to tell the time).

Three sizes of the clock are available which are the G270 which measures 47.6 x 16.2 x 56.6 CM and this one displays the time, date and day of the week. The next size is the G225 which is slightly smaller measuring 42.2 x 11.8 x 31.8 CM and shows just the time and date. The smallest clock is the G100 which measures 29 x 11 x 14 CM and displays the time only.

Costing a hefty 810 GBP (about $1600) for the large version, I think I will be giving this one a miss. The clocks are available from thorstenvanelten.

Black Dice Limited Edition Watches

black dice limited
The Black Dice limited edition watches are very limited with only 250 each being made. They feature dot matrix displays, day/date/time and seconds, city world time, day light savings, multiple alarms as well as being waterproof with a stopwatch and back light. Overall they are quite basic, but look great. The two new model numbers are the BD-018-04 and the BD-004-04 and cost $195 each.

Digital Coin Counting Money Jar

Digital Coin Counting Money Jar

Know exactly how much loose change you have

If you like collecting loose change then a smart jar is a good idea to have. As each coin goes through the slot it is counted and then the total amount is displayed on the top of the jar on an LCD screen. The jar is made of plastic with a lid which screws on. Unfortunately it does take away the fun of counting money, although I guess you could use the excuse to still count your change and test that the automatic money counter is doing its job right.

The device requires 2 AA batteries which I am sure will last a long time with LCD being quite low powered.
