Acer Launching Chrome OS Devices in Two Weeks

VentureBeat are reporting that Acer are set to launch new Chrome OS based devices in as little as two weeks. The new devices (we assume netbooks and maybe smartbooks) will be launched at Computex that is being held in Taipei from June 1 to June 5.

Google [GOOG] designed Chrome OS to function on netbooks, tablets and smartbook devices, so it could be either one of those with the emphasis probably being on the netbook and smartbooks.

No other information is known about Acer and their plans for Chrome OS, but as June is only a few weeks away, it wont be long before we find out for sure where they are heading with Chrome OS. [Read more…]

Apple iPad 3G Roaming Costs to Drop with MAXRoam microSIM

When taking any mobile phone or 3G connected device abroad, the roaming costs can get very scary, very quickly. Bills in to the hundreds of pounds can be stacked up with in a few days if you’re not careful.

This will be also true for the Apple iPad 3G if you intend to take it abroad and use the 3G services with your own microSIM card then you might be in for a shock.

A company called MAXRoam are now offering a microSIM that can be used across Europe where they are offering 50MB of data for ‚¬75. When you pay ‚¬75 for the microSIM you get 50MB free to use anywhere in Europe and once the data is used you just need to pay ‚¬75 more for another 50 megabytes. The Vodafone website says 50MB of data is good for about 4 hours of browsing, but doesn’t include streaming and downloading large files for example. [Read more…]

Vodafone add new iPad microSIM Dataplan

Vodafone has added a new 3GB data plan for those wanting an Apple iPad microSIM. Previously the only options were 1GB for £10/month or 5GB for £25/month. The new offering is an in-between plan that brings 3GB of transfer for £15/month.

The £15/month 3GB plan is in-line with the other two providers, Orange and O2 who also offer the same 3GB £15/month plans.

The microSIM it’s self is free to get, but when choosing the card you need to specify what data plan you want. Also note that the card is a microSIM and not a SIM card, so unless you can build some sort of adapter, it won’t work in a regular phone as it is a lot smaller than a traditional SIM. Also note that you only get data on this plan as you wont be able to send text messages or make calls on the iPad anyway. [Read more…]

Apple iPad UK Pre-Orders now Shipping June 7

If you were hoping to have Apple [AAPL] deliver your iPad in the UK on the launch date of May 28 then you have already left pre-ordering too late as the new shipping date for pre-orders has just been changed to June 7 for all models.

It isn’t clear exactly why the date has changed, but it is either because the UK was allocated a little amount of stock, or that the UK all love the iPad and have pre-ordered in to the hundreds of thousands. We suspect with shortages in the US that the first option is the reason in that Apple allocated lower amounts of stock internationally.

This doesn’t mean you wont be able to pick one up from an Apple store on launch day although keep an eye out the day before on queues as in some cases they may be rather large. [Read more…]
