Smartbook Logo 3G is not a Smartbook

Smartbooks are usually classed as devices that have an ARM-based processor along with 3G connectivity built in. Their aim was to use a slower processor and have good connectivity allowing users to check email and surf the web. Companies have started building these lower priced Smartbooks and categorising them as Smartbooks. One such device is the Compaq AirLife 100.

A company called Smartbook have now come along and created a new notebook called Logo. The Logo is not a Smartbook though (well it is but isn’t if you know what I mean). Smartbook have created the Logo to be similar to Smartbooks, but the only similarities are that it has a 3G modem built in. [Read more…]

ASUS Eee 1015P, 1016P and 1018P Leaked

Details have emerged about three new ASUS Eee PC’s that are expected to be launched at CeBIT in the next few days. Each of the Eee PC’s falls in to the 1000 series and therefore, each has a 10 inch screen. It is expected that each of the netbooks will also run the Intel Atom N450 processor.

ASUS Eee 1015P

The ASUS Eee 1015P is an update to the ASUS Eee 1005P, but in this build it has a larger touchpad. It has a matte display and chiclet keys but the body of the netbook has been uprated to aluminium. The battery life is also similar to the 1005PE in that it gets around 14 hours although that is without wireless switched on, and we assume without too much demand on the processor. Either way, 14 hours with all that switched off should still see a good amount of hours with wifi switched on. [Read more…]

Apple iPad uses PowerVR SGX Graphics Hardware

Confirmation has arrived from Apple [AAPL] that says the iPad uses the same family of graphics chips found in the iPad and iPhone.

Confirmation didn’t arrive in an official document, but instead it was tracked down in the iPad SDK Beta 3 documentation. At the moment it doesn’t specify which chip out of the family that it is, but just indicates that a particular chip is there.

Using OpenGL ES on iPad is identical to using OpenGL ES on other iPhone OS devices. An iPad is a PowerVR SGX device and supports the same basic capabilities as other SGX devices. However, because the processor, memory architecture, and screen dimensions are different for iPad, you should always test your code on an iPad device before shipping to ensure performance meets your requirements.

New iPad SDK Mentions Video Calling

The Apple [AAPL] iPad was first announced about a month ago and at that time it was revealed that it doesn’t have a camera at all on the device. A few weeks later it was spotted that the iPad’s bezel actually had a cut out for a camera but it still seems like the final iPad won’t actually arrive with a camera. This could mean a second generation iPad is already being built.

A new iPad SDK was recently released that was also found to support a front facing camera, camera flash, zoom and video conferencing.

This information was found in the SDK thanks to a couple of buttons that show large Decline and Accept video call buttons which appear to be too big for the iPhone screen. [Read more…]

LG Unveil 13.3 Inch Capacitive Multi-Touch Laptop Screen

LG have created a new display that has obtained the Windows 7 Touch Logo certification. The screen measures 13.3 inches and is a capacitive multitouch screen that is designed for netbooks and laptops.

LG have taken a slightly different approach in creating this touchscreen. Normally a layer is applied over a standard display. In this case, LG have built touch sensor within the display it’s self. Benefits of using this type of system are that the screen size can stay the same thickness regardless of it being touch or not (which ads slight bulk to a screen). Also picture quality is not filtered at all allowing for crisp images to be seen. [Read more…]
