Remove Google Background – Sorry, You’ll Have to Wait

Trending in Google [GOOG] right now is the phrase Remove Google Background. Lets give a bit of a brief history on this. Google today started going Bing style in that it now shows a background image on it’s home page.

It seems that many people want to remove the google background image and return the search engine to it’s regular simplistic white background and uncluttered setup.

Unfortunately after a bit of digging around it appears that this cannot be done and that we are all stuck with backgrounds although a few tricks can be used to bypass the background. [Read more…]

Google Music Could Compete with Apple iTunes

Google [GOOG] a few weeks back at the Google I/O event, gave a very brief sneak peak at a new web-based music service that would tackle iTunes that Apple [AAPL] run.

On June 4, a logo was found on the Google servers showing that the service could be called Google Music. The logo is above in this post (note that the logo has now been removed from the servers).

It is expected that Google Music will be part of a new section in the Android Market and that some sort of streaming will be made available for users. When we say streaming, it isn’t confirmed just yet if streaming will be made available, or if music you like can be just downloaded direct from Android Market on to your Android device and then played back. Dennis Gabor Honoured for Inventing Holography

Today Google is recognising Dennis Gabor by changing the logo on it’s main google.com web page. Changing logos on the home page is common practice by Google [GOOG] and is referred to as Google Doodle. Examples of past one such as the playable PacMan logo that was up there recently can be found over on the Google Logo site.

Today Dennis Gabor is honoured because he invented holography. 110 years ago on June 5 1900 Dennis Gabor was born and 47 years later in 1947 he managed to discover holography to which a patent was file in December of the same year. [Read more…]

Amazon Kindle 2.5 Update Delayed by a Few Weeks

Recently Amazon [AMZN] pushed out the 2.5 update for the Kindle to a number of users for testing purposes. Based feedback from the select few, developers at Amazon are now making changes to the code in preparation for launch.

This has pushed the update back by a few weeks although Amazon do say it is still going ahead. Amazon say that the update will be pushed out to more users which could mean it’s a second round of testing before the final version launches.

No official release date has been provided yet, but it’s good to see the company being open with Kindle users and letting them know exactly what’s happening and what is to be expected. A list of upcoming enhancements can be seen below. [Read more…]

HP Not Interested in Smartphones with Palm Purchase

We suspected all along that the reason HP [HPQ] purchased Palm [PALM] was more to do with webOS than it was the Pre or Pixi although we had hoped to see a bit of a push in the webOS smartphone arena. HP has confirmed that smartphones are not the reason it purchased Palm though. The information comes from the HP CEO Mark Hurd who said…

We didn’t buy Palm to be in the smartphone business. And I tell people that, but it doesn’t seem to resonate well. We bought it for the IP. The WebOS is one of the two ground-up pieces of software that is built as a web operating environment¦We have tens of millions of HP small form factor web-connected devices¦Now imagine that being a web-connected environment where now you can get a common look and feel and a common set of services laid against that environment. That is a very value proposition.

Google Chrome OS Launching in Autumn

Google [GOOG] said today that it is planning on launching Google Chrome OS this year in the autumn. Chrome OS will be free to use.

“We are working on bringing the device later this fall,” said Google vice president of product management Sundar Pichai at CompuTex Taipei, Asia’s biggest IT trade show.

It is expected that millions of people will download the new operating system when it launches. The OS it’s self is based around the Chrome browser and is designed to function with web based applications such as Google Docs, GMail and other applications. All data is stored in the cloud allowing you to open up your computer session from any computer or tablet that runs the OS. [Read more…]

Microsoft Respond to Google pulling their OS

Yesterday we wrote about Google [GOOG] and the rumours that they were pulling Microsoft [MSFT] operating systems from staff computers giving them the choice of only Linux or Mac OS with the eventual move towards Chrome OS.

Although Google hasn’t officially made a statement about pulling Microsoft operating systems from it’s staff computers, Microsoft has gone ahead and responded.

When it comes to security, even hackers admit we’re doing a better job making our products more secure than anyone else. And it’s not just the hackers; third party influentials and industry leaders like Cisco tell us regularly that our focus and investment continues to surpass others.

Steve Jobs Interview on D8

Last night, Steve Jobs was interviewed at D8 and a number of things were spoken of. Nothing said was particularly new as we expected, but the interview gave some great insight in to how and why Apple [AAPL] makes the decisions it does. The reason nothing particularly new was announced is that the WWDC event is starting this coming Monday which is where we will hear all the good stuff.

In no particular order we should add, the first thing we will mention is about the iPhone OS and where it all started. It was quite a surprise when Steve said in effect that the iPad came first. iPhone OS was designed to run on a tablet originally at which point Steve said that it would make a great phone. Apple switched to creating the iPhone and of course, the iPad followed about 3 years after that. [Read more…]

Google Drop Microsoft Windows OS on Staff Computers

Back in January, Google [GOOG] had problems in China with hackers. The hackers cause problems because of loopholes in Internet Explorer, the Microsoft [MSFT] browser. We now hear that Google is dropping Microsoft operating systems from it’s staff PC’s. The move is a security effort said one anonymous employee and he went on to say that Google is now giving staff choices between Linux or OS X to use as an OS.

For the rare circumstances where employees want a Microsoft operating system PC, the installation apparently will now require CIO approval.

The move also is said to be a step in the direction of Google moving all staff to it’s own operating system ie, Google Chrome OS. [Read more…]

Amazon Kindle Slim Version Launching in August – Rumour

A new rumour about the Amazon Kindle has started. The rumours now circulate around an Amazon Kindle Slim version that will shave some of the bulk of the original model.

As well as being a thinner device, the third generation Amazon Kindle will also have a more responsive screen that will have a sharper picture. Neither touchscreen or colour will be included in the new slim Kindle.

Earlier this week the CEO of Amazon said that colour isn’t in the immediate future although it is being looked at. Perhaps we could see a colour Kindle next year although we are just speculating here. [Read more…]
