Intel Atom System-on-chip (SoC) Unveiled

Intel have announced a new version of it’s Intel Atom processor that uses a system-on-chip configuration. The Intel Atom SoC has been nicknamed Tunnel Creek and will be based around the Moorestown Atom chip.

The chip it’s self will be designed to be used in computers embedded around the home which could include home media systems, phones, tablets or perhaps even in-car entertainment and navigation systems to name a few things.

SoC allows the chip to contain the CPU it’s self along with a memory controller and graphics cores as well allowing easier integration in to devices. [Read more…]

Adobe Prepping Lawsuit against Apple – Rumour

We are hearing rumours today that Adobe are preparing to file a lawsuit against Apple [AAPL]. The rumours say that this is related to the changes in the iPhone OS 4.0 SDK which essentially blocked Adobe from working on the iPhone with their 3rd party software.

It seems that Apple blocking 3rd party coding has been the last straw to bring Adobe to this.

It of course isn’t clear if Adobe will get anything out of this as essentially it’s hardware that Apple create and it would appear that they can do what they like in terms of what they think is best for users. The legal system will have to sort it all out though. Also the fact that right now this is just speculation, so it’s hard to really comment any further. [Read more…]

Google Earth gets 3D Right down to Street Level in NYC

Check out New York City on Google Earth. Google [GOOG] along with many people helping out over at YourWorldin3D have managed to get all of NYC on to Google Earth in 3D right down to street level. The video below shows a demonstration of what can be achieved.

The software used is part of Sketchup that allows you to use pictures captured from above buildings in several angles and create 3D models of the buildings.

It isn’t clear how long it has taken to get the whole of NYC complete, but the results are quite impressive. [Read more…]

Google Docs Upgraded

Google [GOOG] have launched a major update to their Google Docs service that brings several new features to the free service. This includes a redesigned spreadsheet application, document app and a drawing editor. As well as improving each of the services, Google have also created group chat functions within each app.

The whole upgrade to Google Docs revolves around collaboration whereby Google believe this part of the service lacks. Several people can update a single document that can then be destroyed by a bad save by someone. The new version brings in more tools to make it run like desktop versions and also includes the ability to mark-up character by character.

Google Docs now makes it possible to see real-time what others are writing on the opened document. As the other user writes it is immediately updated on your screen. Up to 50 people can work on a document simultaneously. [Read more…]

iPhone OS 4.0 Developer Agreement Defended by Steve Jobs

When the new Apple [AAPL] OS was announced last week, some changes to the development process also changed. The changes to iPhone OS 4.0 included the lack of ability to develop applications in anything other than Objective-C, C, C++ or JavaScript as executed by iPhone OS WebKit engine. What that means is software such as the Adobe iPhone Compiler now cannot be used.

If you remember over the last few years, Apple have never allowed Flash to work on the iPhone OS. After a few years of trying, Adobe recently changed their approach by creating software that allowed native applications to be compatible with the iPhone that were created originally in Flash and then converted to an app. This is now not allowed on the new OS which has upset Adobe.

Greg Slepak wrote to Steve Jobs when finding this out…

Slepak told Jobs he believed the reaction to the change across the entire internet was negative, including from Daring Fireball’s John Gruber, who Slepak called Jobs’ “biggest fan.” Jobs reportedly responded by sending a link to Gruber’s commentary on why Apple changed section 3.1.1 of its developer agreement. “We think John Gruber’s post is very insightful and not negative,” the Apple CEO allegedly said.

Geohot gets “Other OS” working on New PS3 Firmware

On April Fools day, Sony released a new PS3 firmware update that in particular, got rid of the Other OS option on the older and fatter PS3. If you decided to run the update then you basically lost your Linux or other OS you had running on the PS3 along with any files that you may of had associated with it.

When the announcement was first made, popular hacker Geohot urged people not to upgrade if they wanted to keep that feature and also mentioned he was in the process of making a work around for it.

The work around has now been created although it hasn’t been publicly released just yet. In the video below you’ll see a PS3 running the latest firmware 3.21 along with the OtherOS option still present. When the hack is launched it will be just a matter of installing a PUP file and once done, the option will be enabled. [Read more…]

Intel Atom D525 Clocked at 1.8GHz – No Extra Power Consumption

Intel have announced their next Atom CPU called the Intel Atom D525. The D525 is clocked at 1.8GHz and with that extra speed, Intel say the processor requires no extra power consumption due to more efficiency being built in.

The new CPU is compatible with DDR3 memory allowing movement between the two to happen more quickly, thus providing a better end user experience.

As of yet, the information is not official although the new Atom D525 is expected to land in the second quarter of this year (which is any time now). [Read more…]

Microsoft could launch “Pink” Smartphone Series on April 12

Both Apple [AAPL] and Microsoft [MSFT] announced press events yesterday. The Apple event is to showcase their new iPhone OS 4 that looks to be launching later this year. The Microsoft event is a little more hush in that we are not sure as of yet what they will be launching.

The invites from Microsoft had a message on them saying “It’s time to share” which was included along side an invitation to a mystery event.

Rumours have indicated that the Microsoft Courier might be introduced at this event although it is believed that MS will be unveiling the new MS smartphone platform called “Pink” – well, that’s the code name at least. [Read more…]

Apple iPad Sales could reach 7.1 Million in 2010

This weekend will finally see the long awaited Apple iPad go on sale and sales estimates for 2010 are in the millions…7.1 million to be exact (according to iSuppli).

This is expected to be followed by 14.4 million during 2011 and with 20.1 million sales expecting to be reached during 2012 – How I wish I was an Apple [AAPL] shareholder right now!

With estimated sales like this, Apple will have successfully introduced the first ever mainstream tablet, however, Apple are unlikely to enjoy the vast lead they enjoyed when they launched the iPhone as the tablet market has some major competition expected to be launched in the near future which will test the longevity of the iPad craze. Apple iPad Insides Revealed Courtesy of FCC

Have you been wondering what the Apple iPad looks like inside? The FCC have taken one apart to make sure it clears their tests and have posted the images on-line. One thing to note here is that this FCC teardown is no where near as in depth when compared to the one iFixit will do tomorrow, but it’s still interesting to see what’s going on in there including how much actual space there is available even though it contains a massive set of batteries.

The picture above shows the back panel (the screen rests on top of this) whereby the two large brick shaped objects are the batteries that keep it powered for 10+ hours. You can also see the dock connector running across the batteries and see that it’s slightly unfastened from the bottom edge of the iPad.

One of the images below shows the main circuit board that contains the brains that run this thing… ie the A4 chip although specific chip numbers have been covered up I guess to protect their identity before the launch… again, iFixit no doubt will reveal all chip numbers associated with the iPad.
