The Softbank carrier in Japan has pushed out a subsidized iPad 16GB WiFi + 3G deal that allows folk to pick the iPad up for free. The deal does require you sign up for a 24 month contract and pay out ¥4,725 per month which converts to about $56 at todays exchange rate.
This deal could do very well for the company although as Engadget points out, it needs to be marketed.
It seems like a number of networks are looking at subsidizing the iPad recently. Over here in the UK, four of the major networks have already announced deals to knock the price of the iPad down when signing up for a contract. Perhaps companies are realising that 30 day rolling contracts are not good enough to retain customers, so hence, they sign them up to 18 or 24 months.
We should be seeing more of this over the coming year.
