Eric Schmidt of Google [GOOG] has announced that 200,000 Google Android smartphones are being sold each day. Back in April that number was 60,000 and just two months ago it was 100,000. 200K represents an impressive growth rate over the last few months and one that Google has to be happy about.
That number is just one drip from a stream of good news for the platform this week, including 866 percent year-over-year growth and the top spot in NPD’s sales rankings.
Although we are sure that Google is happy with the speed of Android devices shifting off the shelves, we suspect that they wont sit back and enjoy it for more than a minute or two as they will be looking to again double that in the near future.
Google Android is currently on version 2.2 AKA Froyo which recently began to be pushed to various smartphones. Android 3.0 Gingerbread is believed to be next although Google is now waiting a bit longer between updates to avoid too much fragmentation. We might see Android 3.0 by Christmas at a guess.
