Hitachi 7mm Thick Laptop Hard Drive Unveiled

Hitachi has created a range of new hard drives that measure just 7mm thick. The new super slim drives are 2.5 inches in size.

Two versions have been launched called the TravelStar and the CinemaStar. The two versions are built for different tasks. The TravelStar drives were designed to function in laptops and other portable devices while the CinemaStar drives are optimised for media such as audio and video streaming.

Each model has low power consumption requirements as well as shock resistance, quiet acoustics and of course, they are just 7mm thick making them a good candidate for the new Intel Canoe Lake laptops that could potentially measure just 15mm thick in total.

Storage wise the drives will have capacities of up to 320GB in size.

The TravelStar Z7K320 will spin at 7200 RPM and have 16MB of cache. Support for the SATA 3Gbps interface is also used. The 7200rpm drive brings an improvement of 18% in terms of performance vs the slower 5400rpm models of the same capacity.

The TravelStar Z5K320 is a lower spec model that spins at 5400RPM although it has the same 320GB capacity. However, Cache is lower at 8MB.

The CinemaStar Z5K320 hard drive: Hitachi claims that this is the first 7mm hard drive designed specifically for AV-streaming devices, such as set-top boxes and DVRs. It allows these device to stay compact while offering a large amount of storage. The drive comes with 8MB of cache memory, supports SATA 3Gbps, and spins at 5,400rpm. It also futures low-energy consumption and quiet acoustics.
