About 2 weeks ago, HP announced the first webOS based tablet… the HP TouchPad. After hearing about all the specs and about the new version of webOS that will ship on the device, we were only given a vague release date of sometime in the summer. No pricing was provided.
We now hear from DigiTimes that HP could be shipping the tablet in March which in turn, will see HP selling the TouchPad as early as April.
The information comes from sources within the HP upstream component partners who also comment that HP is aiming to ship 45 to 48 million notebooks and tablets in 2011 with the HP TouchPad forecast to be in the 4 to 5 million range.
The TouchPad is one device that does look like it could provide good competition foe the iPad. It is built well, runs a new version of webOS which is version 3.0. It also has all the right connectivity built in, has a 9.7 inch screen that has 1024 x 768 pixels. Cameras are also built in front and back, allowing for video calls if needed. Touchstone has received an update that allows users quickly share data across webOS devices by simply tapping the devices together. This is of course an idea that Android 2.3.3 also incorporated in to their latest build although the HP version appeared to have arrived first.
Back to the release date of the TouchPad for a minute, as the jump from Summer to April is quite large we expect to hear HP announce something about that soon unless the source didn’t quite get it right. We’ll let you know if we find out more.
