Last week, HP announced that it was closing down its webOS device business. This lead to HP dropping the TouchPad price down to $99 which then sparked a huge wave of people wanting to buy the heavily discounted tablet. It appears that an update will be coming soon though. When speaking to CNET, HP said “HP TouchPad owners can look forward to an over-the-air update that will enhance the platform and add functionality and a growing applications catalog.”
It hasn’t been revealed exactly when HP will push a webOS update out to current users but expect it soon.
“HP is fully committed to the ongoing support and service of customers who purchased webOS devices…We plan to continue to investigate the best ways to leverage WebOS software and grow the applications,”
QuickOffice is one app that was launched in the last couple of days that brings support for Word/Excel to the webOS based tablet.
Interestingly enough, HP also saw a huge spike in device activations as well as 3 to 5x more app downloads since the price drop. It just goes to show that people are interested if the price is right. Perhaps HP (or a new buyer?) could focus on a budget tablet as there’s clearly some demand for decent but lower cost devices.
