Verizon just let BGR know that an OTA (over the air) update is being made available for the HTC DROID Eris. The updates were being pushed put at midnight last night meaning that when you read this you might have a notification of a new update ready to be installed this morning. However, only a small group will first get the update today with other users getting the update as Verizon roll it out over the next few days.
The new ROM brings the Eris up to version 1.16.605.1 with an update to the radio taking that up to 2.32.40.11.09 which probably doesn’t mean that much to most people. Details of what’s included can be found below.
* While on a call and the device is in screensaver mode, pressing the End key now takes the device out of screensaver mode, and a second press will end the call.
* On-call mute and speakerphone icon functionality is enhanced.
* Upgraded functionality after activation eliminates the delay users were experiencing in receiving their first call.
* Device now switches effectively from 1x mode to 3G.
* Device no longer requires users to reselect a default email after power-cycling.
* SMS and MMS messaging delivery is improved.
* Eighty-character MMS/SMS message subject lines are now allowed.
* Improved picture messaging functionality allows messages from LG phones to be opened.
Looking at the details there aren’t too many exciting things in there although the SMS and MMS messaging features sound interesting.
