Along with a Retina display, the iPad 3 will also have a more powerful processor. We have expected for a long time that Apple will launch a quad-core chip called the A6. This was expected as the iPad 1 was a single core A4 and the iPad 2 was a dual-core A5. A quad-core A6 was believed to be what would follow on next. But, it appears that Apple may opt for the chip seen below which is an A5X.
Due to coding on the chip saying 1146, we believe that this particular board was made in the 46th week of 2011. So, either the A5X could be just a temporary name on the Logic Board in case it leaked (like it did just now), or it could be a spruced up version of the A5 that handles graphics better. The Retina display has four times the amount of pixels to handle, so a boost to the graphic is certainly needed although Apple will be aiming to keep battery life to 10 hours still.
Expect to hear more in the next few weeks. Rumours are hinting at an announcement date of March 7 with a potential launch a week later.
