Liquid crystal display (LCD) is widely used for flat panel displays due to its
attractive appearance when compared to CRT and PDP displays. The disadvantage of using LCD is that a back light is required separately. An organic EL display with light emitting properties will allow technology to evolve and erase the need for the separate back light. Organic EL can also be manipulated to be a thinner, lighter and more energy efficient than its LCD counterpart.
This is why the new organic display from Konica/Minolta is so exciting. It is definitely a step in the right direction! The current prototype has a luminance of 1,000 cd/m2. No news has been revealed if this will hit production any time soon but konica/Minolta will surely be drawing attention to their pioneering research and development of this type of material. Their website holds more information on the differences of LCD and organic EL materials and the science that will bring us the next generation of technology. [konica website]
