Yesterday, LG published a Facebook update (now deleted) that said Android 2.3 Gingerbread would not land on the Optimus line of smartphones due to it requiring a 1GHz processor to run it. Optimus smartphone use a 600MHz processor.
Shortly after that, @morrildl tweeted a “random note” as he called it and said that Gingerbread had no hard minimum processor requirements.
LG has now responded officially to the comment and have basically said it was a misunderstanding and the Facebook update shouldn’t have gone out as they do not know the requirements just yet…
“LG released information prematurely regarding the minimum processor upgrade requirements for the LG Optimus. Google recently announced the Gingerbread platform and has not yet published the Gingerbread Compatibility Definition Document (CDD) or the public branch open source code. Once the CDD and the source code is public, LG will evaluate the upgradability of the Optimus Series. We apologize for any confusion or misunderstanding. We will alert you as soon as more information on this topic is available.”
So there you have it… we just need to wait longer for Google to push out the CDD documentation so that smartphone manufacturers can evaluate and look at the upgrade options.
