Powerlines occasionally get faults such as cables breaking due to wear and tear from thousands of volts being pumped through them.
Fixing them requires specialist equipment so that the maintenance workers can move the cables around while they are still live. Of course, it’s a rather dangerous occupation.
For this reason the LineScout has been created. The LineScout is a robot that can inspect powerlines and point maintenance workers in the right direction to fix the cables.
The robot is remote controlled and allows someone on the ground to control movement across a cable. The robot has cameras built in that capture both live footage along with infrared footage. This allows heat spots to be found and logged so that engineers can find problems before they happen.
The video below shows what is possible with the robots and how it is intended they will be used.
