The Logitech Vid software is getting an update that will allow you to make calls with 720p HD webcams. As well as updating the software, Logitech is also launching four new HD wecams that will work with the Vid software.
Three of the cameras are capable of 720p while the top of the range camera is capable of 1080p although the software for video calls restricts that to 720p (although local recording can be done at Full HD).
The first of the cameras is the Logitech HD Pro C910. This camera costs $100 and is the top end of the cameras capable of 720p video calls and 1080p local recording. A dual-mic setup is also included that is used in a similar way to the Nexus One in that one detects ambient sound and cuts it out. As well as being able to shoot 1080p video, the camera can capture 10 megapixel still shots.
The next camera in line is the Logitech C510 that is designed to be used with a laptop. This camera has an 8 megapixel still picture sensor and is also capable of capturing video at 720p. The camera can also move around allowing you to capture both in front and behind a laptop for example. This camera costs $60.
Two lower end cameras are the C310 and C270 which cost $50 and $40. Both can also achieve 720p video calling but do not have the other features that some people don’t need.
The three lower end cameras will ship this month with the higher end camera (the C910) shipping in August.
