Microsoft [MSFT] has filed a patent that can create bumps our dips on a touchscreen.
The system uses a light-induced layer of shape-memory polymer that when UV is shined on to it, the surface can protrude, dent in or go soft or hard.
The idea behind it could be to use it on a surface computer where when a QWERTY keyboard appears on the screen, the keys also appear as small bumps to provide a bit of tactile feedback.
It isn’t clear at the moment if Microsoft will use this technology, so as of right now we couldn’t say when a release date will be. The technology is not just limited to surface computers though and potentially could have application in a number of devices such as smartphones and tablets.
