Yesterday, a new tool was launched that allows you to unlock a feature on Windows Phone 7 smartphones. Once unlocked, you gain the ability to sideload apps as though you were a developer.
Microsoft [MSFT] has now officially responded. In simple form, they advice against doing it.
“We anticipated that people would attempt to unlock the phones and explore the underlying operating system. We encourage people to use their Windows Phone as supplied by the manufacturer to ensure the best possible user experience. Attempting to unlock a device could void the warranty, disable phone functionality, interrupt access to Windows Phone 7 services or render the phone permanently unusable.”
It isn’t clear if the problems of interrupted access will be caused by Microsoft putting restrictions in place, or if there are real problems. We suspect Microsoft will try do something their end to prevent the unlock from happening.
So, if you want to unlock your Windows Phone 7 to sideload apps, then proceed with caution.
