O2 has announced plans for a new trial service that will allow smartphone users to make phone calls and send text messages over a WiFi network. When communicating over VoIP with either text or SMS the phone number of the smartphone is still used. The test is being performed to see how VoIP can be delivered effectively to customers. It is also likely to be used to free up the data network a little to keep performance high for users.
O2 will initially be testing with a select few customers on either iOS or Android smartphones. Eventually it will roll out to other devices.
If successful then O2 will be launching O2 Connect sometime in 2012 to all users. For now, it will open to a select few sometime this month.
