Over the weekend Apple released iOS 5 beta 5 for developers. Within just a few days the iPhone-dev team has already found that jailbreaking it is possible.
The software needed for the iOS 5 beta 5 jailbreak is Redsn0w 0.9.8b5 which jailbreaks, installs Cydia and lets users install alternate apps on the device.
One thing to take note of with this release of redsn0w is that jailbreaking iOS 5 b5 does require a tethered boot. Each time your iOS device needs to be switched off, you’ll need to tether it to your computer and run the tool again to boot it up.
Compatibility shows it works on iPhone 4, 3GS, iPad and the iPod touch. RedmondPie report that it works on almost any iOS device other than the iPad 2.
If you want to carry on getting OTA updates on your iOS 5 device then you’ll need to restore the phone back to the original state to have that functionality.
Expect to see more about this particular jailbreak, especially in the run up to the full release of iOS 5 which is expected in September.
One final comment… If you decide to run this on beta 5 then make sure you read every line of instruction on the iPhone-Dev teams blog as there’s a lot of caveats regarding basebands etc…
