Samsung announced on an earnings call last week that in 2012 the company will begin to put flexible screens in to smartphones.
“The flexible display we are looking to introduce sometime in 2012, hopefully the earlier part. The application probably will start from the handset side.”
The flexible screens used will not be just for smartphones. Eventually, Samsung will roll out flexible displays to tablets as well as other devices.
Samsung is able to achieve this thanks to a purchase of Liquivista at the beginning of this year. The company is now able to create electronic displays that are flexible, use low power and have transparency.
Although flexible screens are not new, they have yet to take off mainstream. We’ve seen several devices in the past that have roll-out displays as well as bendy displays but none have really been good enough to use day to day and each have generally suffered with low resolutions and slow screen refreshes.
Perhaps with a company such as Samsung around it will help raise the profile of this type of display and device.
