How to Fix DVD Scratches

A long time ago back in September of 2007 we mentioned a technique on how to get scratches out of a phone screen which was comprised of using a bizarre concoction of an egg and a cloth soaked in a heated egg and then warmed up in the oven to create a substance that will fill the scratches… I have no idea if that technique works, and I’ll admit now that I have no idea if this new technique for fixing CD’s and DVD’s will actually work, but as all you need is a banana and a few other household substances then I’m sure it will be fine and easy to test.

The tutorial was created over at Unplggd and allows you to fill in scratches on DVD’s allowing them to be played again in a DVD. We assume it will also work on other optical media although that’s your choice if you test it. [Read more…]

Kingston DataTraveler 5000 with 256-Bit AES Hardware Encryption

Kingston have launched the Kingston DataTraveler 5000 USB flash drive. Although it doesn’t come with the highest capacities we expect these days from flash drives, it does protect data by featuring 256-bit AES hardware encryption.

The 256-bit AES hardware encryption uses XTS mode which Kingston say is much stronger than the CPC and ECB modes available. By using XTS along with Elliptic Curve Cryptology encryption algorithms (ECC) the drives actually meet Suite B standards that are approved by the US government… ie, it’s a safe place to dump your files. Keyboard vs Tablet vs iPhone etc… Text Entry Test

A test was done over at Gyford that put six devices to the test against each other to see which had the quickest input method. The list included a pen (yes, pen and paper), a keyboard, a Newton, Graffiti, Treo and iPhone. The test was run by timing how long it took to enter a 221 word block of text which the writer memorised a couple of years ago which reads…

I have enough faith in my fellow creatures in Great Britain to believe that when they have got over the delirium of the television, when they realize that their new homes that they have been put into are mortgaged to the hilt, when they realize that the moneylender has been elevated to the highest position in the land, when they realize that the refinements for which they should look are not there, that it is a vulgar society of which no decent person could be proud, when they realize all those things, when the years go by and they see the challenge of modern society not being met by the Tories who can consolidate their political powers only on the basis of national mediocrity, who are unable to exploit the resources of their scientists because they are prevented by the greed of their capitalism from doing so, when they realize that the flower of our youth goes abroad today because they are not being given opportunities of using their skill and their knowledge properly at home, when they realize that all the tides of history are flowing in our direction, that we are not beaten, that we represent the future: then, when we say it and mean it, then we shall lead our people to where they deserve to be led!

GSM Encryption Hacked

An algorithm designed back in 1988 and still used today has finally been cracked and published online by hackers. The A5/1 privacy algorithm is currently used on about 3.5 billion GSM connections.

The algorithm was cracked open by brute force where a team of hackers fed in strings of numbers until they managed to solve it. The old key is 64-bit, but there is a newer key called A5/3 that is a 128-bit key that has been available since 2007 which is not widely used at the moment although the phone operators could make a few changes on their end to start using this code. The problem here though is that the 128-bit, although it would take longer, could be cracked the same way. [Read more…]

Google Announce URL Shortening Service

google_logo_lgGoogle [GOOG] have announced a new service this morning that is capable of shortening URL’s. The service is called Google URL Shortener and is designed for those who like to share links on websites such as Twitter.com where you are restricted to the amount of characters you can tweet.

People share a lot of links online. This is particularly true as microblogging services such as Twitter have grown in popularity. If you’re not familiar with them, URL shorteners basically squeeze a long URL into fewer characters to make it easier to share with others. With character limits in tweets, status updates and other modes of short form publishing, a shorter URL leaves more room to say what’s on your mind ” and that’s why people use them.

Google Create a Public DNS

google_logo_lgGoogle [GOOG] are on a quest to speed up the internet. Just recently they mentioned a new protocol called SPDY they have created that aims to speed up the way browsers get the data needed to render web pages by compressing headers and other functions such as passing more data through at a time. Now they have announced that they have opened a public DNS server that aims to resolve domain names quicker, thus speeding up your internet browsing.

When you enter a domain name such as www.gadgetvenue.com, that name needs to be translated to a number (IP address) that the server is assigned and can be contacted by. It can be thought of as a phone book for the internet. Google have created a DNS server that helps to speed up these lookups by using a number of methods such as provisioning servers where there is a need, prevention of DDoS attacks (that can slow DNS resolution down), load balancing and prefetching of DNS data and storing that data in a cache. Google ads Automatic Captioning to Uploaded Video

youtube-automatic-captionsGoogle [GOOG] have added a new feature to Youtube that automatically ads captions to videos by using speech to text technology.

The technology used works with the same algorithms that Google Voice uses and converts the text in to text at the bottom of the video. The feature is designed for those who are hard of hearing or those who do not have sound enabled on their PC.

As of now the service is just a trial and only available on certain educational channels as well as the Google channels. If it proves to be successful enough then I suspect it will be rolled out to all videos eventually. [Read more…]
